You need to double check the replay...and your knowledge of the rules.

I have seen the replay countless times. I'm not knocking your opinion, I just think the fine, as nitpicky as it is, is warranted. There was helmet to helmet contact, intentional or not. The entire point of the fine is to deter from tackling in a way that ends in contact to the head or neck of a defenseless receiver. I don't get how some are disputing that's what happened on this play.

So the helmets can't touch at all?
Not even gingerly?

I'm confused.

That can't be controlled even with careful hits.

Do I think the rule is overkill? Yes.
Do I think the fine is justified given the set rules? Sure.

It was an unlucky break for Jenkins. He can't control where Thompkins head is when he goes in for a proper tackle. It is what it is.

I'm actually asking what the rule is, because I don't know anymore.

quote:

(b) Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:
(1) Forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him; and
(2) Lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or forehead/”hairline” parts of the helmet against any part of the defenseless player’s body.”

With the Jenkins/Thompkins hit, while helmet to helmet contact was incidental, it did occur, as a result of Jenkins lowering his head to try and make a proper tackle.

The difference on the Sproles hit is that there was not a blow to the head or neck.

Either play could have gone either way; like I said, Jenkins just got unlucky that he made contact with Thompkins head, however hard or soft it may have been. Would I call the contact to Thompkins head "forcible?" Probably not, in my definition, but I'm just a fan.

eta: Oddly enough, that was pulled directly from a 2011 article on a hit by [then] Falcon Curtis Lofton on... Marques Colston.

It means Jenkins bites the pillow, because the itty bitty ticket committee is coming down like a hall monitor on his ass.

Not even a 'heh'?

My conclusion about all this is that I really think the game would be better if they consulted me before issuing personal fouls and penalties to Saints players.
I have a tendency to be right.

I definitely think polls should be taken on ST for fine severity. Side note: I just happened to catch a segment on NFLN that explained the process, introduced the head cheese, etc. Basically they have a bunch of people in a room sitting at monitors picking out plays to fine, so it's all a very discretionary process. I'll also point out that Goodell has no part in any of it. They also said that owners call, during the games, to bitch about hits. I could imagine Kraft taking Mayweather's dick out of his mouth long enough to place a phone call.

Oh great.

I wonder if Robert Kraft has some clout in the NFL.
Probably not.

That and I wonder if Benson has even activated his chatpack.

How has it come to this?

The most fundamental aspect of football, wrap up and tackle a receiver after he touches the ball, is now a fine.

No wonder every player quit wrapping up. It's illegal to do so.

Would you consider that contact to the head or neck? I would.

Because Thompkins decided to try and pull a Joe Horn and fall before getting hit? He made that decision late and after Malc had already lined up his body to make a hit on, what would be, an area around Thompkins' chest. I just caught up on all the posts on this thread. I'm frustrated that there's a team of men/women that watch these plays looking for fines. I feel like there's a quota they need to meet per week - give out speeding tickets or lose your job. You'd be calling ticky-tacky shite too like this hit.

Facts of the matter, Malc was trying to stay legal with the hit but brushed Kenbrell's facemask because of a move that Kenbrell himself initiated by trying to go down before the hit. If I were any player not named Danny Amendola or Austin Collie, I'd just lower my head, initiate contact with the defender's helmet, and draw the penalty. frick this.
