You think the tiny tax the government is levying will cover that tab? Not a prayer.
All of it, no. Cumulatively from everyone paying the penalty, it should add up to a decent amount.

What about every emergency visit?

There were 516 murders in Chicago alone last year. Many were probably rushed to the hospital, few likely had insurance(maybe medicaid).

Medical Care fixed for insured people? No
Medical Care fixed for uninsured people? No

What the shite did we just accomplish?

If you get sick you can buy it tomorrow???

Holy shite. What fricking world are you living in? You must have insurance coverage when you have an incident. What made you think otherwise? Are you a high school kid living with your parents? Wait; I know you are a dude in his 30's I think...my god, man.

I've got nothing to say now... SMH...

Did that sound coherent in your head? Try again.

What does coverage of preexisting conditions mean to you?

Yes it did, moneyg. Follow if you can: you cannot just buy insurance when you get sick.
You go to ER? You have to have insurance before you get there. Good lord, how slow are you people?

As someone who has some insurance background on the claims side, I can fathom anyway that anything other than skyrocketing premiums or taxes will allow the system to work. I handle basic property claims when I was in insurance and it blew my mind how any insurance company ever made any money and that was at a small company. It frightens me to imagine how expensive health care will be when literally NO ONE....let me repeat for emphasis...NO ONE...is excluded and NO pre-existing condition is excluded. Literally everything wrong with any one of 300,000,000+ residents is covered without exception.

Imagine how high premiums will have to be to cover all that expense.

You should ask this question of the people of Massachusetts who already liver under such a system.

showing your ignorance. The list of differences between the two systems could take up 5 pages.

It seems like you are changing the subject. The question asked was about whether uninsured people could just buy insurance once they get sick and benefit from it just like anyone else. I pointed out that such behavior would be impossible because of the open enrollment periods. I'm not interested in getting sidetracked.

I've been covered under my wife's plan for the past dozen or so years. Now her company is doing open enrollment & plan now under these rules are adding a $1500 fee(not premium increase) since I have the opportunity to get insurance through my job.

Since I will be getting off of her plan in Jan., if I wait until March/April to enroll in mine, do I have to pay the fine?

Of course...that goes without saying.

Please tell me that you understand that under our current system you can show up and get emergency treatment for free. Its illegal to turn somebody away.

As long as this is the case people will game the system and still get taken care of.

Pretty sure TUBA is morbidly obese. Not surprising really.

This is the part I'm interested in. If I get in a car wreck are they going to turn me down if I don't have insurance?

I don't think they will, but I'm not quite sure. And who will pay the bill if so? Since the law states that they cannot garnish wages or go after assets if you fail to pay, what's to keep me from paying them $1 a month till the day I die?

I'm very interested in such a situation, and I don't think anyone has truly answered it.

Bull shite. In order to be eligible for Medicare (almost every hospital out there) you have to treat anyone that shows up at your door. Do you honestly think gang bangers are having to show their insurance cards to get treated?

Would same gang banger care if you ruin their credit when they don't pay the $15k invoice you send them?

Is said gang banger going to buy insurance (or pay a fine for that matter)?

The whole thing is fricked up but I can promise you those who don't pay now...still won't pay. Those who do pay...will pay more.

Nope. You may not get treated for a hangnail but you will have to be treated and stabilized if you show up in the ER. Hell...even if they try to transfer you to another facility you can sue them.

So basically this changes nothing except gives the people already with insurance higher premiums and deductibles, and allows the gov to collect a penalty/tax from the uninsured?

Sounds awesome.

Hospitals have to take you in if you don't have insurance but they still BILL you for it.

So if you want to go without insurance and then get in a terrible accident and taken to the hospital, yes they will treat you. But enjoy the bill for tens of thousands of dollars they will give you on the way out. And if you refuse to pay it then enjoy a life of terrible credit.
