I think you're talking about the same duck called black bellied whistling duck which you see in La occasionally. I've seen them in the spring trying to take over wood duck boxes near the house

A squealer is a wood duck. A tree duck is a Black Bellied Whistling duck. They don't look or act anything alike.

Both Wood Ducks and Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks are cavity nesters, nesting in holes of old trees or in man-made structures that are commonly called Wood Duck boxes. I've heard ppl use Mexican whistling and Mexican squealing ducks to talk about BBWD's but i've never heard squealers to describe Woodies. BBWD's are in the tribe called Dendrocygnini which translates roughly to "tree swan". Wood Ducks are dabblers grouped in a different tribe. BBWD's are much bigger and flap their wings slower than Woodies. That's about all I've got

Not sure there's an argument.

It sounds like what you call a "squealer" is a whistling duck. A tree duck is a general term for ducks that nest in trees.
Wood ducks and Whistling ducks are types of tree ducks. Thus, Squealer = Tree duck

In Sw La. we have thousands upon thousands of fulvous tree ducks migrate to the rice fields to lay and raise their young every spring. They leave in the fall and head back to Mexico. That's what we call squealers. Never heard a wood duck called that.

I also call the fulvous a Mexican whistler.

That boggles my mind. People call wood ducks squealers more than they call them wood ducks around here. Hell, Haydel's has a Wood Duck call called The Squealer call. I think we've stumbled upon a new white sacacraperch

Show's some of the differences in people of our great state. You can travel a short way and find how some things are very different than others. I like it. I'm not saying either way is wrong. It is how it is.

Black belly whistling duck have orange/pink bill and feet and a whit patch on their wings.

Fulvous whistling ducks are more brown/chestnut and typically have gray feet and bill.

Two different species.

I am from tallulah and never called wood ducks squealers.

And the tallulah sonic is better than rayville's!

I think its worth mentioning that Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks (pictures in the further above post) and Fulvous Whistling Ducks are two different species.
