I was bidding on a pair of speakers last week, I suspected the guy had multiple accounts after the I was outbid a few times, so I stopped bidding. The next day I got a message saying the bidder and seller could not complete the transaction and I was the next highest bidder on the item, and I could buy them for that bid. It was definitely rigged and I found a cheaper pair later that day

Exactly what I was trying to say earlier, but you just solidified my case.

I am bidding on some lsu Georgia tix and all the people driving up the price have 0 past transactions? I feel like the seller has several accounts and is just driving up the price.

This exact same thing happened to me today. I've been watching these Alabama-OM tickets that started out at $50. They are now at $230, and the bid history shows one account bidding against himself all day.

Learn how to bid! You don't bid early.

Ebay lost the publics trust years ago. Buyers and sellers, I haven't used ebay in a couple of years now. Same thing with PayPal, it was great until ebay bought them.

I flat out stoppped using Ebay when they started pushing PayPal really hard and were making noises about you had to have a bank account attached to your PayPal account to have a Paypal account.

frick that, with a credit card you can challenge a charge, if they have your bank account there's no protection guaranteed and they have access to enough information to steal your identity. Back around 2002 a friend I knew at work had her bank account drained and a person running around destroying her credit rating because they hacked her bank account information through the PayPal site.

That's not one person bidding against himself. The person that is winning the auction has a higher max bid set than anyone else bidding has met. Until someone exceeds that max amount, he will always be the highest bidder.

Whole lot of misinformation and butt-hurt in this thread.

Damn, I'm an idiot. In my defense, I've bought a total of one item off ebay.

Bought a brand new 18" center console boat/motor/trailer in 07 from an Ebay no reserve auction.
$5800

Good deals can be had if you're lucky enough

Bought a couple of things on ebay yesterday. I go in knowing what I think a good deal is and what I want to pay, if someone wants to pay more fine with me. Some people overpay for items but unless I'm getting a great deal I just keep looking. But I've bought a little bit of everything off ebay and have only had issues on 2 out of over a 100 items.

I was seeing the bid go up, I waited to enter my bid with 30 seconds left, then was hitting F5 constantly waiting to see if it would increase. It didn't in the last seconds so I won. But the bid history showed us(other bidder) going back and forth a dozen times. That is the definition of sniping.

30 seconds is an eternity, I use Esnipe.com and set it to bid 2 seconds before the auction end. Sure, there is a chance someone has a proxy bid set on ebay that will still outbid me, but this is the only way to avoid a bidding war that runs the price up.

Nice boat!

I haven't bought a boat (got a couple off Craigslist though), but I've bought 2 vehicles, a motorcycle, watches, scuba gear, etc. off Ebay. I even buy batteries off Ebay. I've probably bought close to 500 different items off it.

As far as the seller bidding the price up, who cares?! I don't. If the price gets bid up to high regardless of who's doing the bidding, then move on to another item. The seller is still going to get charged commissions for selling that he will have to pay and sometimes listing fees as well. It's in his best interest to get the most that he can, but if he does win his own auction, it's gonna cost him fees to Ebay, so it's a gamble for the buyer.

Ebay is a really unique system for connecting buyers and sellers from around the globe. You just need to understand how the system works to fully take advantage of it.

i don't even use Ebay anymore. No good deals can be had now that everyone has proxy bidders.

Haven't used ebay for an auction type purchase in over 3 years.
