Man Attempts to cross Atlantic with Hundreds of Helium Balloons
Posted by Bluefin on 9/12 at 4:36 pm
quote:

CARIBOU, Maine — Hundreds of multicolored balloons used Thursday to launch a balloonist for a trans-Atlantic crossing look like a page taken from the script of the movie “Up.”

Instead of using a conventional hot-air balloon, Jonathan Trappe lifted off using more than 300 helium-filled balloons, like those used in adventure in the Disney-Pixar movie.

Trappe’s goal is to float across the ocean.

Thrilling Video of Takeoff

No way this guy makes it. He could go down anywhere. He hits the top of a gusty storm and BOOM - he's in the North Pole.

A flock of birds and BOOM - he's in the ocean.

Best of luck to him, I guess.

Damn expensive and a waste of helium. Should've flown for that price

Is this even possible to do? Seems like a 99% chance of failure/death.

I mean I could see it possible if he wanted to cross over the Ponchatrain while being followed by boats or something, but the Atlantic???

I thought he was gonna do it in one go. Apparently not, he's stopped in Newfoundland for the night. Lame.

He had to land in New Foundland 350 miles into his trip.

the cluster balloon was never able to achieve a stable altitude and developed a yo-yo effect – rapid descents with the aircraft hitting the surface of the water, followed by rapid ascents to altitudes as high as 21,000ft or more.
