You can thank crony capitalism for this. Eye doc lobbyists push state legislatures to pass laws requiring eye exams.

It goes against the very concept of liberty, but Americans don't seem to care.

you're right. If some idiot wants to go put contacts in his eyes and frick up his vision even worse than it already was then that should be his God Given Right!

I'm not trolling at all.

And you're right, people should be able to buy whatever contacts/glasses they want.

The routine 1-800 contacts must follow is that they fax a rx verification to the prescribing eye doctor. If the prescribing doc decides that the rx is expired (contact lens rx's expire after 1 year), then a denial is faxed back. If the prescribing doc does not respond within some time frame then the rx is assumed valid and then filled. At my office, I show some flexibility if you are an established patient. I won't however validate an old rx over an extended period of time because whether or not you believe that your prescribing doc's rx is not necessary, he/she is still legally liable.

You have to get an axam once every 12 months to get contacts.

IMO it is bull shite. Contacts are a controlled medical device that cannot be dispensed without a script. This has pissed me off for years. It is total bull shite and increased insurance costs and premiums paid for everyone. Most people's presription does not change from year to year or it is so minor it is not noticable. Additionally, if a script is not working, people will get a new one and an exam.

Bottom line it is a total bull shite cost that makes healthcare cost more for everyone. Maybe once every 5 years an exam should be required. but to make contacts a controlled medical device in the concern for public safety is a joke.

FTR, I have great insurance and do not have to pay for anything at the eye doctor ever and my monthly premium is only a few bucks (I have no idea what it is really like $4-$10 bucks or something totally irrelevant).

The system is still a joke though.

Order your contacts from one of the Canadian companies. No prescription required. They will ship to US.

I use Coastal Contacts and haven't had an eye exam since right after Katrina. They always send my order
A trick I learned from a friend you might try. America's Best has the free exam with glasses offer. Go get the free eye exam and while in the exam with the optometrist mention that you'd like contacts too (normally contact eye exams cost like $100). He'll put the contact info on the rx too. Then use your favorite contact site to order and use the America's Best info so they can contact them for Rx.

I'm not sure how I skirted the routine, but my correspondence was as follows (this was through Lens.com):

-They emailed me saying I needed to provide a prescription. I didn't know this so I was pretty pissed.

-I just googled some random Vision Center Doc. I'd never used him before, but he was the same zipcode as where I was shipping them so for some reason I thought that might help.

-Got an email from Lens saying "We contacted the eye doctor's office about your order # 2012657937 and they declined to approve it for the following reason: Not a Patient."

-From then I could either update prescription, email prescription or something else.

-I then received an email the next day saying "Federal guidelines mandate we attempt to verify your contact lens prescription with your eye care provider. We have sent your doctor a fax with your order details to ensure their accuracy. The same guidelines stipulate your doctor has 8 business hours within which to respond. Your eye care provider failed to respond within the required 8 hours. As such, we are processing your order based on the prescription information you supplied to Lens.com. In the event your doctor contacts us with any changes to your prescription after the order has shipped, we will contact you by email to inform you of the changes.

At this time, no action is required on your part."

-Contacts arrived about a week later. Idk if I got lucky or what, but maybe try a couple random doctor locations until you get one who isn't prompt about responding. 8 hours is pretty quick so I guess I got lucky, not sure.

It is bull shite you have to have a prescription for these things.

I don't understand this. It's not like I'm going to OD on my lenses or start selling them to kids so they can get all visual.

It's a federal law so yes, it does apply to Louisiana.

Probably has more to do with making sure you can see and don't run over some kids while driving.

Eye exams are required for whom, exactly?

People that want to buy contact lenses. Otherwise, you typically can't buy them (although obviously some can get them without a valid prescription).
