Can you confirm that your brain has never been in "auto pilot"

I disengage autopilot as I'm pulling up to my destination. I always back in to my carport (yeah, I'z poor) or parking spot which requires a lot more attention. Might not know which way I went to get there but I realize I'm there and am forced to check my surroundings including any passengers I might have. If one of my kids was on the floorboard I might not see them but I would have already told them to get up and put their seat belt back on or I'd have pulled over to spank them before reaching my destination.

There are all kinds of little habits you can adopt that mitigate potential accidents.

How the hell can you be in the car with another human being and FORGET they are there? Not possible for me.

Please donate your brain to science when you pass. They'll want to study someone's brain that defies all previous research.

Auto-pilot has nothing to do with driving, FWIW.

Don't smother her too much or she might have daddy issues...

I kid, I kid. I'm 32 and will be a daddy's girl till the day that I die.

Should have read the rest of my post.

I think before it's all said and done Hoover will end up annexing all of B'ham. That place is like the Roman Empire with the way it's expanding.

That's where I grew up. That city has grown so fast and gotten too big for its britches. They just cancelled school bus service for 2014 going forward. The tax base isn't what it used to be due to the nice shopping leaving the city.

I am sure it happens to everyone, but not for 2.5 hours. Hell, I notice if I have left my cell phone in the car after 15 min.

Please explain how I can forget about the existence of a person with whom I am currently interacting and engaging?

Because the parent usually does something out of the norm. As was in this case where they typically go to day care before going to the office.

And you realize your phone is gone because within 15 minutes you would have gotten an email. In these cases, their brain has told them their kid is at daycare.

So now not only do you need to remember to take the child out of the car but you have to remember to put something on the dash to remind you that a child is in the car.
holy shite.

what's wrong with someone being "too" careful?

while I'm not excusing this situation, autopilot happens to everyone. if bringing a toy to put on your dash helps you to avoid falling into your routine and possibly killing your kid, what's the harm in that?

Have you read any of this thread? We are talking about how it can happen. Not the specifics of this incident. Try to keep up and don't be so myopic.

No you don't. That's why it doesn't happen like this. Something likely happened along the way to bringing their kid to daycare that changed the routine.

my vision is 20/20, thank you.

I'm talking about this specific incident, not the possibility of it happening.

In layman's terms...its the "swiss cheese effect"...

Has this article been posted yet?

What kind of person forgets a baby?

The wealthy do, it turns out. And the poor, and the middle class. Parents of all ages and ethnicities do it. Mothers are just as likely to do it as fathers. It happens to the chronically absent-minded and to the fanatically organized, to the college-educated and to the marginally literate. In the last 10 years, it has happened to a dentist. A postal clerk. A social worker. A police officer. An accountant. A soldier. A paralegal. An electrician. A Protestant clergyman. A rabbinical student. A nurse. A construction worker. An assistant principal. It happened to a mental health counselor, a college professor and a pizza chef. It happened to a pediatrician. It happened to a rocket scientist.
