How does this happen? Child passes away after being left in car in Bham

Just saw this on the news. Happened in the upscale suburb of Homewood in the Bbam area. Praying for the child, it was extremely hot today. How can someone be so stupid and forget your child is in the car?!

Homewood Police are investigating an unresponsive child found inside a vehicle.  It happened around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon on 19th Street and Oxmoor Road.  Police on the scene say a 1 year old child was found unresponsive inside a white Lexus SUV.  The child was rushed to Children's of Alabama.  Right now, the child's condition is not known.  Meanwhile, police are questioning the child's mother and witnesses on the scene.

ABC 33/40's Sarah Snyder spoke with a nearby business owner.  He says the child's family owns Genesis Nail Spa.  The mother usually takes the child to daycare but instead stopped by to visit her husband.  The business owner says the toddler was in the car from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  The child was given CPR until paramedics arrived.  The child's temperature was around 105 degrees.

happens ALL THE TIME

when a parent does something outside of their routine, its scary to think of the consequences.

Saw this on my facebook feed earlier, not that it matters but it was in the SOHO, very upscale (majority of Homewood is not).

Sad :-(

It's easier than you think.

A lot of times it happens when the parent that doesn't normally have the kid is in charge of bringing them around for a day. People get lost in their routine pretty easily and if the kid falls asleep and doesn't make noise, someone can quickly forget that they have a kid in the car.

It's similar to highway amnesia. It's really, really sad, but it doesn't always mean that the parent is an awful person.

Yep. Put a toy or something on the dash every time you put the kids in the car.

I guess I can see that happening. Lesson learned is that we all need to slow down a little, can't imagine what that baby went through.

I'm a parent, and I could see how it happens. I bet no one feels worse than those parents.

Yep. And the comments under the article are full of people vilifying the adult, because they don't want to think that this could happen to them.

Drove to work yesterday and parked my car only to realize I forgot to take the baby in the back to preschool.

Exact thing happened to a friend of mine. He did not remember untill a meeting adjourned hours later. Child survived. There was lasting damage.

I can't imagine what that feels like. So glad my kids are old enough to babble all the way in to school... Prayers sent.

Prayers sent. Even if the child survives, there will likely be brain damage.

Happens a ton. And it's a shame. Easily avoidable.

Yeah, called my wife to tell her about my brain fart and it scared her. It didn't even occur to me at the moment how close it was to being a nightmare scenario.

i used to pick up my kids and they would sit in our conference room after school and do there homework. a company was sinking electric poles and they drilled through a gas main. i evacuated all my employees and realized while i was doing the headcount that i had forgotten my girls in the conference room.

Doesn't mean it couldn't. You adjust your mirror because some jackass is riding you...

That's why I put a toy on my dash every time I put them in the car.
