I concede that it doesn't directly mean it's overrated, but it certainly doesn't mean the opposite....
People choosing a restaurant is a form of rating. If it's very busy, then it's highly rated by people. If you want to discuss the people that frequent Rum House, that is a different discussion.

To others who think I hate on everything: it's quite the opposite. I go to Restaurants on a fairly frequent basis. I enjoy dining and am willing to try cuisine's from all over the world.

I always lend my recommendations when they are requested. I try to post reviews of restaurants I patronize and share my experiences with the board.

If anyone enjoys the Rum House, that is fine with me.

This is an opinion board about food and I express mine, freely.

Don't even think of stereotyping the people who dine there. Yes, there are a lot younger people, but if you look carefully, especially at other times of day, it's pretty diverse. One afternoon it was just me, Samuel L. Jackson (no shit) and his girlfriend/daughter (wasn't sure) eating at the bar. A couple of people from Touro were at a table.

Congrats. So do I. I seem to remember in another thread that you preferred another pizza joint opening on Magazine as opposed to something more interesting and less available (a sort of tapas seafood place). See, it's not black and white.

Thank you, kind sir.

As you can see, I tend to be very shy when it comes to mine.

Sorry, I was looking back through the posts and this caught my eye. I guarantee you that eat I eat (sorry . . . dine) at as varied and interesting a selection of N.O. restaurants as you do. Over the years, I'm pretty confident that it's an even larger selection than in your experience simply because of longevity.

In a way, your argument reminds me of that idiot Tom Fitzmorris who loathes anything that he doesn't consider authentic by his laughably arbitrary standards OR that doesn't fund his operation commercially.

Rum House is not a stellar restaurant in terms of cuisine. No one, as far as I can tell, is saying that it is. However, it's a somewhat different menu for N.O., it's homegrown and has consistent quality. I wouldn't take an out of towner there to show off New Orleans foods, but I would take them there on a Saturday afternoon if we were walking around Magazine and wanting a cocktail and a bite to eat.

frick it. Today's two dollar taco (actually three dollars now I think) day. I'm going there. What time should I show up?

This is your grand example of the tragic dumbing down of the New Orleans culinary scene? Four joints that opened in locations that I don't think ever previously housed restaurants, three of which are just glorified food stands?

Oh goodness! The absolute HORROR!!

Funny thing is, for every Dat Dog or Liberty Steaks (never tried that one, so I couldn't comment as to what may or may not be so offending to foodie-pseudo-sophisticate sensibilities about it) I can think of 10-15 other interesting and innovative new establishments in other previously empty spaces that excite me. Yet, this is what you choose to obsess over and get "sad" about?

Pathetic.

I'll definitely be visiting Rum House in BR. I just wish it was a little closer to campus.

You say this.

Then you say this.

No it isn't. That is all I'm saying.

Maybe I haven't ordered enough of the menu. What is different about tacos?

Ok, I would choose a different place in the same situation.

Bunch of us going tonight.

Truth is, I love the Rum House. I'm just trying to thin the crowds out by disparaging the place, online.

The two statements are not at all contradictory. And a restaurant can be a great place to eat without having "stellar cuisine" as I intend the term.

I know they aren't contradictory. I never mentioned authentic NOLA cuisine, only that it isn't good. So we agree.

I've never seen such a defense for a place that none of its defenders actually think is good. Keep up the good fight, gentlemen.

I think 5 pages on Rum House may be overdoing it. I bid you adieu!

You don't have to be a foodie to understand the Rum House is overratted.

I'm from BR and have lived in NO for a few years. I've been to many restaurants. Rum house is good. I like their brisket taco's. It's a different feel from the standard mexican restaurants. The food is geared towards a more mexican/caribbean infusion of cultures. I find it good, and me and my fiancee' go there whenever we are in town and are just touring around the city.

I love the pretentiousness of you NO die hards here.
Is it the best place to eat in NOLA? No.
Is it a good place to eat in NOLA? Yes

They do what they do very well, and are rewarded for it. Yes some of it is atmosphere, but isn't that what about 75% of sales from a restaurant comes from? The draw of a nice atmosphere? You're not going to go eat good food in a rusted out, moldy crackhouse.
Their food is good and the atmosphere is good. If either of the 2 were not good, then they wouldn't get business. Plenty of restaurants sprout up and die because they only had 1 or the other. You have to have both to stay successful in the Restaurant biz, which is a business that has one of the worst success rates.

I think it was more calling out the ignorance of a poster who couldn't recognize his disconnect between what he perceives and what is reality.
