The Concept of "White Privilege"
Posted by SlowFlowPro on 6/30 at 11:10 am
this concept has become a big discussion point in the media since Jeantel's testimony

here is the definition i got from wiki

quote:

White privilege (or white skin privilege) refers to the set of societal privileges that white people are argued to benefit from beyond those commonly experienced by people of color in the same social, political, or economic spaces (nation, community, workplace, income, etc.).[note 1] The term denotes both obvious and less obvious unspoken advantages that white individuals may not recognize they have, which distinguishes it from overt bias or prejudice.[1] These include cultural affirmations of one's own worth; greater presumed social status; and freedom to move, buy, work, play, and speak freely.[2] The concept of white privilege also implies the right to assume the universality of one's own experiences, marking others as different or exceptional while perceiving oneself as normal. It can be compared and/or combined with the concept of male privilege.

to summarize, whites (as an entire group) receive societal benefits solely due to their race, and they don't even realize it. this subconscious act is based in a sort of group-identification that creates an ignorance to other races in society

this concept has really been pushed during the #TrayvonTrial, and has exploded since Jeantel's testimony. this concept is used to describe why white people can never understand the black interpretation of the events of the trial, "why white people don't understand Rachel Jeantel," etc

it is not without critics, as the (black) philosopher Lewis Gordon states:

quote:

A privilege is something that not everyone needs, but a right is the opposite. Given this distinction, an insidious dimension of the white-privilege argument emerges. It requires condemning whites for possessing, in the concrete, features of contemporary life that should be available to all, and if this is correct, how can whites be expected to give up such things? Yes, there is the case of the reality of whites being the majority population in all the sites of actual privilege from prestigious universities to golf clubs and boards of directors for most high-powered corporations. But even among whites as a group, how many whites have those opportunities?"[

i think this path of thought is insightful, and it shines light on a corollary concept (i don't know if an academic term exists) of "black identification" that whites often don't understand. black Americans, by and large, will identify by race, and an implicit assumption is created that whites do the same. this is the question at the heart of the term

whites are classist/elitist as shite when it comes to other whties, and i think this concept is lost on many blacks. i've written on here for years about creating a term for "black trash" (in terms of culture) that mimics the accepted concept of "white trash", as a way to lessen the claims of racism. if there was an accepted social term to isolate those black people identifying with/pushing a crap culture, it creates a division that shows the criticisms are not made towards a race itself. whites do this within our own social groups without issue (and have for centuries)

in the thread about lolo jones, this was really seen, as one person criticized her for her privileged upbringing. that assumption is made solely because of her views, and funny enough, is completely wrong

also, earlier today i was bringing up the "code shifting" meme that has picked up regarding the Jeantel testimony, as it assumes that white people were mocking her b/c they didn't understand her. i think most white people watching did understand what she was saying, but were criticizing/mocking the very underlying cultural ideals she projected

again, it's not that "white people" were saying "black people are stupid" when they criticized her. they were saying THAT particular black person seemed very stupid, and it is a symptom of a particular culture within the black community (it's also a symptom of a culture within the white community, also, as "white trash" speaks terrible english and celebrates shite culture itself)

back in law school i made a friend who told me, "we've been evolving for 500 years and they're still the same"

this was about white trash, mind you (it was a discussion about "the LP", as he had lived in BR longer than me and was explaining the classist-based mockery of the LP by BR snobs)

that was back when i was a super liberal, and that comment and some other stuff around the same time (thanks, prof bowers) really did completely change how i viewed the world

1. Asians are not white. They seem to be doing really well as a minority in the US.

2. Being white kept Alan Bakke from getting into Medical School.

3. Being white means that if you say the n word, you get fired.

I don't see the privileges. The only black group I feel sorry for are professional black women. I have been friends with several in my life who never married. The discussion went like this:
"Zach, when you take the whole set of unmarried black males. Then you subtract the ones in prison, then you subtract the ones who are unemployed; then the ones who are addicted to drugs; then the ones whose educational level is far below mine. Then the ones who are successful and bright but want to marry a white woman. Do you realize how small the pool is for me?"

Bluntly, this isn't possible.

There are dozens of words for "black trash" out there. Unfortunately, if anyone not black were to use any of them, they'd be referred to as racist.

The reason for this is as simple as it is un-PC to say. That reason is this. The percentage of the black population that would meet the definition of "black trash" GREATLY OUTSTRIPS the percentage of the white population than does.

Hence, any attempt at using such a term ends up casting a wide enough net that people can basically accuse of you saying "all blacks blah blah blah".

Try being a white person who gets along famously with every black person in his circle but uses that term for the large chunk of blacks that one might call "black trash". You use any of those terms and the public gets hold of it and you'll be tarred with the racist label and god fricking help you if you point out you have 20 very good black friends.

They'll use that as PROOF of how racist you are!!

Part of the definition in your posting was the white privilege of being able to speak freely. Paula Dean is a current example shooting a hole in the bull shite concept of white privelage by your definition.

So calm down sparky.

the asian factor is one attack on white privilege. if whites really did keep out non-whites from participating in the economic pie, asians would have never been able to have success, either

this is acutally a big problem/issue in big, southern cities where there are black middle classes

there was an article a few years ago about boyfriend sharing in ATL. that's how many are combatting the problem

Using that white privilege can be a bitch sometime. Better to be an 'underprivileged' black person who can spew any kind of shite and not be called out on it.

his contracts class was a great class for thinking about rote rules and law/economics

it was a great introduction into the failures of the law (and communication in general) and how we should combat the problems in rational ways

plus his lectures on "consumer protection" really opened my eyes to the failure of government intervention and the attack on the freedom to contract between parties

well in my fantasy land, this would be a tool more used by the black community to separate those who make good decisions from those who make bad decisions, in a way to create their own group distance

it's not really about giving whitey a word to use to mock blacks...it's a way to give educated, working-class blacks a way to mock those who create the whole problems behind looking at them as a single group

Two weeks ago the vilified Hannity had two audience attendance shows. One was made up of black conservatives, the other was legal aliens. Both of them would have shamed any F'ing liberal to try to defeat thier arguments about thier party and the ills it has brought to those they keep chained up.

How about not having any people of your race to look down upon. Black people should try and figure that out...

People from India or of Indian heritage do quite well for themselves as well.

Example, Bobby Jindal or any medical related field.

I suppose that's fair. I was already a hardcore libertarian when I took his contracts class, so it mostly just pissed me off

that's impossible for all races and cultures. humans create groups, and we dislike those outside of our groups

race is just one example of a group that many people identify with
