The smoking "tax" in obamacare
Posted by Zahrim on 6/30 at 7:24 am
I saw a question asked in another thread and as it is "TLDR" I am going to post articles here about it...

quote:

The Affordable Care Act — "Obamacare" to its detractors — allows health insurers to charge smokers buying individual policies up to 50 percent higher premiums starting next Jan. 1.

For a 55-year-old smoker, the penalty could reach nearly $4,250 a year. A 60-year-old could wind up paying nearly $5,100 on top of premiums.

Obamacare to Hit Smokers with Huge Penalties

quote:

Among President Obama’s half trillion dollars in tax hikes is a 94 cent tax on cigarettes expected to raise $78 billion over ten years.

glad I am a nonsmoker....

Don't health insurers already charge smokers more? It seems like a pretty common sense business decision given long term smokers will be more likely to have certain health issues than non smokers.

I'm afraid there are many more of these hidden taxes that will rear their ugly heads as each day passes. This bill will prove to be the biggest disaster ever when the smoke clears, IMO.

Good, one of the few things I agree with in the legislation.

People who choose to do things that negatively impact their health and end up costing $$$ in the end, should pay higher premiums.

Just like with car insurance, bad drivers pay more.

You should have to pay more for the things I disagree with?

Are you a conservative? You should have to pay 2x the tax as your liberal friends. I think liberals are more concerned with others and you are just concerned with yourself, so you should pay more.

What makes you think it is profit if the cost of healthcare for smokers is higher?

I get your worry about "prescribed by law" because I'd agree insurers should be able to determine on their own how much to charge. That said, my guess is that they're already doing it. So why the outrage?

Did I miss his point?

I am confused

Is he claiming that I'm wrong because I think people who take risky behavior that results in higher medical costs should be required to pay higher premiums to offset those costs?

Yeah, liberals are more concerned about others - at mine and your expense.

so you should pay more

This is the bull shite part. Why should money I've earned by working for be used to pay for someone else's unhealthy lifestyle who more than likely is on some kind of govt. welfare?

Can you please tell me what his argument is? Is he saying that insurance companies shouldn't be able to charge people more for risky behavior? That everyone should pay the same premiums no matter what you do that forces them to spend more $$$ on you?

Obviously cigarettes are not good for your health, but we better be careful letting the government decide what else is not good for us.

A federal law promising the amount that can be taken is one very big reason to be pissed about it.

Agree with the latter point... But the govt is not charging the extra money, it is allowing insurers to charge it if they so deem necessary.

So they in a sense are deregulating a private business... In an odd way

Is this the new strategy to distance Obama from Obamacare?

In the past, I've heard Obama refer to ACA as "ObamaCare"

Nice.

I can see an argument if it is the govt charging the tax directly to an individual for their habits, but its not.

It is allowing the free market to operate and choose to charge people that involve themselves in risky behavior more to offset the costs that they incur.

Like I said, its just like car insurance. Why should someone who hasn't had a wreck, ever, pay the same premiums as someone who has a wreck every yr?

I wonder if there is a "slut" tax in obamacare? And to be "fair" - sluts that participate in the male-female and male-male varieties of slutiness.

I mean, sluts really are the ones who are at risk for expensive STD's.

Why should those who save themselves for marriage and never cheat on their spouse pay more for their health insurance? That's not fair.

Or would that be considered discrimination against the gay community?
