Uh Oh - Casey Martin feels discriminated against over cart use (AGAIN)

In an instance of history repeating itself, Casey Martin finds himself at odds with a major golf organization over the use of a golf cart.

Martin, the men’s coach at Oregon who was born with a debilitating condition in his right leg that makes walking difficult, was denied the use of a cart Monday while recruiting at a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier in Oceanside, Calif.

Martin, 41, who has blood-circulation difficulties because of Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, won a 2001 Supreme Court decision against the PGA Tour that allowed his use of a cart during tournaments because of his disability.

Now, his dispute lies with the U.S. Golf Association.

Before Martin arrived at El Camino Golf Club for Monday’s qualifier, he said he emailed tournament chairman Matt Pawlak to secure the use of a cart, which was granted. On the sixth hole, Martin was in the cart when he was approached by Pawlak and told that USGA rules prohibited spectators from using golf carts. Martin relinquished the cart.

I can understand players, but this seems to be going a bit far.

He can't fricking walk. What do you want him to do? He won a case with the Supreme Court. He is, in fact, being discriminated against.

If he gets one all should. He gets to watch every kid play holes while other coaches are limited.

Oh don't misunderstand - I am not taking sides here. The "Uh Oh" was in reference to a "here we go again" type of moment

He took on the PGA, is he now prepared to do the same with the USGA?

If he uses the cart to scoot around the course and watch more golf than the other coaches, then yes he should be limited. But if he's keeping pace with a group as a walking coach would, or using the cart to move from one watching spot to another and view the same number of groups as a walking coach I don't get this.

Put a regulator on it that only allows it to go walking speed.

I've seen old people who couldn't walk chilling at the clubhouse during us am qualifying. The rule isn't there to screw people from watching. No way he wins this case.

that's the problem with protected classes...it has absolutely nothing to do with "separate but equal" or "equal protection".....

he has a legitimate health issue and I understand that. but I am sure there are many moms, dads, grandparents, etc. that have not been able to watch that would have loved to get that chance

Now they have to give carts to every handicap person. What about really fat people? They get carts too?

He's not really a spectator though since he's the a golf coach for a university golf team. This would affect his ability to perform his job relative to other coaches.

Still a spectator. The thing here is there is no place to draw the line. What about a caddie who is handicap? What about a person who is on crutches? Etc.

He will likely not pursue this.

He used a cart at the open and in qualifying last year. It's just some USGA moron at the local level. That's redundant though, because almost every person involved with the USGA at the local level is a moron

Of course he used a cart in a PGA qualifying event. Lol. He was playing. That what his case was about. This is something totally different.
