ATL Thread Off Day - Checking in on the Jupton Trade
Posted by OBUDan on 5/23 at 1:43 pm
We're 46 games in and 10 games over .500 boys. We hold a 4.5 game lead on the Nats, who are currently struggling.

In January we made a big splash acquiring Justin Upton in a deal that looked, on paper, like a slam dunk win for Atlanta. Has that held up?

What we got
Jupton - .273/.387/.590, major-league leading 14 HR, team leading 44 hits, with a robust 163 OPS+

Chris Johnson - .350/.386/.500, with a 140 OPS+, he's also 2nd on the team with 42 hits and playing a sound 3B and proved to be a valuable fill-in for Freddie at 1B when injured

What we gave

Martin Prado - .232/.283/.326, he's hit 4 bombs with a 65 OPS+ (worse than every Braves regular starter except BJ Upton). He's been abysmal, making Danny Knobler's piece looked dumber and dumber by the week.

Randall Delgado - 7.62 ERA, he's allowed 8 HRs and 10.5 H/9. Worse than any stint of his in the majors.

Zeke Spruill - 4.88 ERA in AAA after dominating AA ball. Only 24 innings, but being a pen arm makes him expendable.

Nick Ahmed - .149/.221/.157 in AA ball. Yes, a .157 SLG. He has one XBH in 153 PAs. Brutal.

It's early yet on all the youngsters, but Prado seems to have already hit his decline, and his intangibles don't make up for the sharp decline in performance.

You would have to be a god damn moron to think that was anything other than trade rape back in January.

Even if Justin Upton was a lazy bum, it would still be worth it.

I mean, JUp wanted out of Arizona badly. They needed to move him. The trade became pretty unreasonable for their side when they included Johnson and didn't get one of Minor or Beachy in return.

ETA: Or Medlen or Teheran for that matter. They basically traded 3 years of an MVP caliber talent and another solid middle of the order bat for a superutility player and a #4 starter.

Prado is a solid player and all, but I can't believe the Diamondbacks valued him so highly. They should have pushed for Minor or sent him to the Rangers for a bunch of higher ceiling prospects.

wow, I had no idea all the other pieces in that trade (minus Prado) were struggling so much.

I bet the Dbacks are kicking themselves for allowing Upton to veto trades...they would have gotten a sick fricking dealing from Seattle

While it looks great now.

Chris Johnson will regress and his defense at third is serviceable. I still think Juan is the better player, neither a long term solution.

Prado will turn it around, but he was over rated based on one year of defensive metrics. Still he is a solid ball player.

Obviously still too early too judge prospects. I still believe Delgado can be a solid 2/3 pitcher.

Braves obviously got the best player in the deal and that is always a good thing.

Obviously he isn't going to hit .350 for the entire season, but there's no reason to believe he won't hit in the .280-.310 range.

Juan is a better defender and has a lot more power, but until he figures out how to make contact against a lefty and go the other way for a single in a 2 strike count he isn't going to be anything more than what he is right now. I'd much rather see Johnson against a righty than Juan against a lefty too. No idea if their stats support that feeling, but it seems like Johnson is a lot more comfortable facing a righty than Juan is with lefties.

His ceiling is a #3. He doesn't have the stuff or the command to be a top of the rotation arm like Minor, Beachy, Medlen, or Teheran.

I am not really a big fan of Prado's approach this year tbh. He has become so obsessed with doing the little things and being the gritty mascot Gibson wants that it's negatively affected his ABs.

A few weeks ago, I see him drag bunt with two men on and one out out of the 7 spot. Not smart baseball at all.

Yesterday, DBacks are down 4-0 late in the game with a runner on second and Prado is just trying to move the guy over. Not even trying to drive the ball.

17 steals last year was a huge fluke as well. I do think his average is due a BABIP correction.

That trade was horrible for the Dbacks.

Prado will be fine. Spruill is a bullpen arm, Delgado is a back of the rotation guy and Ahmed will be a utility guy at best in the bigs.

What is most baffling is the Dbacks had a number of offers that were better than what the Braves offered.

But ours was the grittiest.

Their entire organization premise is fricking stupid. They fell arse backwards into a ton of talented players and everyone will laud them as geniuses moving forward through no fault of their own.

I don't know...giving up one year of Prado, a 4/5 starter with no breaking ball, a bullpen arm, and two fringe at best prospects for 3 years of Upton plus 4 years of Johnson is a lot

LINK

Keith Law had Assisstant GM John Coppolella on his weekly podcast. He talked about how they built the bullpen and most interestingly that without injury one of the current 5 starters will go to the bullpen instead of AAA
