My 8yo gets money for all his birthdays, good grades, Christmas, Easter..... whatever. He puts everything in his savings account. He spends most of his money on big ticket items. So far he's brought 2 baseball bats, a scooter and a nice pimped out sling shot that was like $30. He has his own debit card connected to his account but rarely uses it.

Sounds like you're doing something right

You have to accept it. But put in the piggy bank. You have a piggy bank, right?

Lighten up, Francis! Kids get 2 days a year to dream about having something more than they normally are used to, their Birthday and Christmas.

Let him be a kid, you can throw around your life lesson 363 other days of the year.

That's the reason she stays pissed at you?

Give him the $100 and then make sure he grows up to be successful. You are treating him like he is destined to be poor.

People are acting like the kid was given thousands of dollars and not a hundred bucks.

OP....if you don't give the kid all the money you should tell your parents why you didn't, since it was THEIR gift to him. If I knew the kid wasn't gonna get to spend it I would have just given him a $100 giftcard to Toys R Us or someplace I know won't be used for socks for the poor child.

He's money hungry...borderline obsessed with it. He asks me to hold my money that's on my money clip, said he loves the sound of it. I just think he's going to shite bricks with the $100. I had a $100 bill on my money clip last week and he was a freak about it...I already knew what my parents put in his card...I asked him what he'd do with $100, he said buy a race car. Not sure he understands 1:1 value. So far he's only spent his money off of the toy isle at Walmart, so he'll be able to make it rain with a hundo.

He's a little king, jeez. He's gotten everything he's ever wished for and we're trying, through this new found love of money, teach him value. We make him buy the things he randomly wants from stores, but money comes too easily. We want him to have to clean his room for $5 or something then judge whether the toy car is worth $8 to him...Just tough when he has $126 in his wallet. Sure it's worth $8.

I know....it is ridiculous. $100 gets about 2 medium sized Lego sets.

He's 7. You are way over complicating this, although it's not surprising for you. Give him his money and let him have fun.

Sounds like your parents were cheap. I got a quarter a chore, to where I could earn theoretically as much as I wanted. Mom had a checklist, and at the end of each month she'd tally it up and give us our money.

Your parents are feeling their impending exit from this world, and they want your child to remember them fondly

Basically the only thing I saved up for when I was a kid.

Well then explain how he could save the $100 and by doing his chores could add more to that $100 and be able to buy something even cooler.

Not a difficult concept for a 7 year old to grasp.

Y'all going on a summer vacation? Tell him he can save it up for buying souvenirs

I'm much less neurotic than I appear. I like to be thoughtful, it just comes across as overbearing and petty. My wife doesn't appreciate it YET. Ten more years and maybe she'll see I'm just being thoughtful, yeah.

Give him $40 and tell him he has to save it. Split the remaining $60 between the kids in his class that didn't even come to the party and tell them they can buy whatever they want.

That should get him ready for what's to come
