What to do about evil in America

Billy O on the View

I would like to pose the questions to the PT...

1) Has the country become more evil?

2) Is the answer to getting back to a day when parents can let their kids go out and play without worrying themselves to death over it simply putting known deviants away forever considering the most recent headlines of Ariel Castro and him having no previous convictions yet 3 girls kidnapped, raped, and held against their will for the past decade?

My bonus questions....

Has Internet porn, porn in general, and perhaps a very casual attitude, openness, and permissiveness toward sex in general in our society given way to consequences that are affecting our quality of life?

What in your opinion has caused America to become a much more dangerous and perhaps more evil place? or if you don't think it has, then what disproves it has become more evil and dangerous?

The Internet has a lot to do with it.

No. It is actually the safest time in American history.

People have been evil forever, nothing will change that.

Eta: we're all capable of evil. What holds most of us back?

"No. It is actually the safest time in American history."

Ssshhhhhh. Does not fit the narrative.

People have been evil as long as there have been people.

We just see more evil now because it gets ratings.

No. We simply hear about it far more quickly and far more in depth. Both factors give the impression there is more.

I do not worry about my boys being kidnapped any moreso than I do about them being shot up in some school shooting, killed by terrorists, etc. With a tiny bit of diligence, the chances are so slim there is no reason to worry.

I've seen SFP come here and drop stat after stat disproving the notion that America is more dangerous. So has Wiki. Your answer is usually that you simply know it is. So my question is, are you honestly asking...or merely telling?

Then why are people so fearful of letting their kids out to play until the street lights come on like when I was a kid?

Is it unwarranted fear?

Define evil, first.

Is the fact that I would be asked to define what evil is an issue in support of America being in a bad place?

No, it would support that there are people who will question the use of a term without said term being properly defined.

ETA: it seems to me that evil is most often associated with religious discussion. Pardon my need for clarification.

Again, is the fact that I have to define what evil IS, because there are varying definitions of what is wrong and right or none of my business, an indication of something in support of America being in a bad place? 40 years ago, this really wasn't necessary, but now it is. Does this all go back to the 1960's questioning morals and norms in society and what is acceptable from what is not?

Simply, YES!
The crime rate is at its lowest point in decades. Children are no less safe now than they were 30 years ago. The difference is that now the media and 24 hour news networks need to fill airtime and "if it bleeds, it leads" which causes the public to think that we live in a more dangerous time.

I agree, sort of. People have needs and impulses and will never be free of them.

Give people incentive to curb those impulses and you have contained "evil." Put them in a nothing-to-lose situation and watch the evil flow.

Immigration policy that leads to easier access and open borders are a key problem born from the idealistic notion of globalization and multi culturalism.

And then the internet can certainly compound the problem of "evil" as it provides easy access to material for those people who are wired for evil-type activities and behavior. That's just a fact of life today.

Yes.

Penn & Teller did an episode of Bull shite about this type of thing a few years ago.

No, it's the sign of a free society developing it's moral code, perhaps.

That's always been the way it works here, a free society developing its moral code.
