John Carpenter Wants to Make a Dead Space Film

I agree with John, this game feels "ready-made" for a movie. So much in fact that it feels like a movie.

quote:

John Carpenter, the man responsible for such horror benchmarks as The Thing, Halloween and Escape From New York, has expressed his admiration for EA's Dead Space franchise, and even suggested he'd love to bring the series to the big screen.

In an interview with Game Informer (via Videogamer), the 65-year-old director compared the games to the Alien franchise, but with a couple of important differences that would help it appeal to modern audiences.

"You know it's great," he explained. "The first game was more - I guess it was like Alien - but not quite. It was a little different than that.

"I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something's on board. It's just great stuff.

"I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I'll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made."
Carpenter's long been a vocal supporter of video games as an art form, even going so far as to help direct and narrate aspects of F.E.A.R. 3. Despite this, he's perfectly aware that game/movie tie-ins can often go awry, and even referenced the recent Aliens: Colonial Marines debacle as one that suckered him in.

"It's all about money," he said. "It's not that something is being mistreated, it's just another marketing issue.
"They're trying to get you to buy the game, which I stupidly did," he concluded.

Carpenter is the man.

I'm surprised he's only 65, though. He looks like he's closer to about 95 these days.

Ghost of Mars > Vampires

Would have been even more clear if GOM had a better lead than Ice Cube.

Hasn't this movie already been made?

Its more like a space version of The Thing. Except everyone is going insane and the The Thing doesn't try to hide.

I've always said that Dead Space would make an amazing film. But, they would have to create a sense of isolation for Isaac for most of the film for it to work. Almost like Cast Away in space. But with alien zombie things.

And it would be fairly hard to add in the supernatural element without it being too cheesy and confusing.

I don't think it would be that hard. Isaac can have a group. Just have that group slowly dwindle in number.

It really isn't supernatural, per se. The obelisk just drives people insane and they begin to hallucinate. That would also make a group of individuals more interesting than Isaac solo.

Also, the solo aspect only works in video games. The whole idea of sending one person to go complete a task while everyone else sits in a room is insane.

In real life, Isaac would've flipped his shite.

If Carpenter could get a good screenplay then this would be an amazing film. I was watching one of his more recent films and his ability to produce tension and paranoia was still there, but the script was pretty terrible in comparison.
