Even Liverpool down in the dumps was able to win the league cup.

and if that's all Man Utd win they will be failures no matter who the manager is, no matter who the players are, etc.

they're not a Vanderbilt, or Miss St. They're the Alabama of soccer, and their Saban is retiring, but they're still Alabama

I could see this situation working like the Shankly to Paisley days at Liverpool. Legendary manager with great personality builds a super club and steps down only to be replaced by another understated super success.

This is a little different as Paisley was arguably a better coach than Shankley. I highly doubt that happens with SAF and DM.

I completely understand what Xavier is saying. A league cup would be considered a disappointing season for United fans. And a league cup and a #3 finish is certainly possible (and I'd argue likely) in the first year and possibly the second.
