Skyrim's Politics: The Affect of Video Games on Political Thought...
Posted by FT on 5/7 at 9:53 pm
This is about a video game, yes, but admins, please don't move this thread. It's about a type of media and it's potential influence on political thought. I know lots of gamers also post on the PoliBoard.

If you played it, who did you side with?

Why? Was it an emotional decision, a philosophical one, or just because one seemed more fun?

Can you put more details in the OP so people can catch a clue as to what you are talking about?

I like this thread idea. Hope you get some good responses (unlike this one). Haven't played a video game since 2009.

Originally I sided with the Stormcloacks. But then I found that Ulfric Stormcloack was likely just staging the rebellion in order to get in good with Aldmeri Dominion and I started a new game and sided with the Imperials.

I sided with the Stormcloaks.

Mostly because they didn't have my head on a chopping block, but I felt that the spirit of revolution was more apparent on their side.

I sided with the imperials.

Ulfric would have divided entire relm and had Skyrim take on the entire Dominion on his own. This would be suicide. Once the imperials took control, they would have their forces plus the loyalists of Skyrim to fight.

An uneasy peace to settle a much later conflict.

Call of Duty's Black Ops II is comical with the "USS Obama" and the images of a Hillary like president. No way they could be brainwashing next gen voters.

I sided with the Imperial Legion on my first play through.

I don't really remember. I think it had something to do with not liking Ulfric Stormcloak.

I need to play it again.

This is an original idea for a thread, but when it comes to video games, most decisions, at least in my case, come down to emotional quandaries. Although for some, I do suspect that they might consider political ramifications, or they may use their political opinions to choose their actions, but for most its the emotional aspects of morality that come into play.

Statistically, and yes there are statistics based on this, people choose the "Good/Paragon/Moral" action over the "Evil/Renegade/Immoral" one.

The Sstormcloaks. Skyrim was one of the Empire's last allies and how does the Empire thank them? They question the deity of Talos, the religious link between the nords and the rest of the Empire. Even when I realized the Empire was just buying time to regroup, it just didn't sit well with me.

I couldn't fight for the folks who said "so, forget you god, heritage, and culture, and we'll be expecting all of your sons to come fight for the Empire...k thx!"

Live e-free or die.

I sided with the Imperials. Them wanting to chop my head off was unsettling but I figured that's just how people conducted business in that day and age. I didn't like the Stormcloaks so they weren't an option for me.

Ulfric seemed like a douche too.

Why would anyone side with the empire when the game starts off with them trying to behead you.

I could get more money robbing their barracks blind than I could stealing from the Stormcloaks shitty little tents.

Really, my biggest problems with the Stormcloaks is that they seemed racist as frick, stuck in the past, and somewhat fascist.

Stormcloaks. Lesser of two evils. Both were bad choices. The last Fallout game was similar.

No clear good side in either case. You had to pick the one with the less warts if u wanted to fight the good fight.

I like the premise of this thread. Never thought of this.

The decisions of both games go to core beliefs.

I sided with the Empire. I liked the principle of the people of Skyrim governing themselves, but I had major issues with their human rights violations, racism, etc. Also, the empire needed every bit of strength that it could in order to defeat an even more oppressive regime: The Thalmor.

The empire would provide freedom of religion, it was better equipped to deal with the Thalmor, and it had a history of success.

frick that.

With my enchantments/dragon armor I could single handedly defeat the Thalmor.
