A 75# turtle has around 30-35# of meat.

To me, letting one walk that size is like letting a $400 bill walk.

The original plan was to eat, but then we decided he's probably over a hundred yrs old and we released him into my friends pond. We see him often sooo if we every get real hungry for turtle, we know where to look.

Nah...actually we were 4 wheeler riding and come up on him on the edge of a big mudhole.

Looks like a Common snapping turtle. I didn't think they even got THAT big. I hear there are a lot of turtles in cow ponds in Arky.

Some friends who have with cattle people somewhere up there have told me stories about the Arkansas guys going pull them some out of the cow ponds at will to take home.

Game and fish said it was an alligator snapping turtle. We thought common cuz of the shell. We got turned in for having it. We had to catch it again to show'em it was still alive. The shell didn't look like one to me. The head did. Maybe it's a hybrid? Biggest common snapper I've caught was about 45lbs.

Yep and alot of little back water ponds. I used to paint timberlines for Deltic so I found alot of secret fishing/turtle holes.

EXACTLY what threw me. The head definitely looks like one but he smoothness of the shell made me think otherwise.

Hi yella, chocolate brown...it don't matta when the sun go down!

How'd you do that, exactly? I would've told one to put his hand near his mouth if he needed proof it was alive.

We had been tipped that there was a rat in our 4 wheeler group (it was a big group). We put it in a little pond in my friends backyard. They told G and F that we shot it and ate it. So we pulled his arse out and showed 'em. That's when they said it was an alligator snapper. Threatened to ticket us for harrassing wildlife. Sheriff intervened though. It was a bunch of bull shite.

Even the tongue was like both. Our indecisiveness is what saved it's ass. Had there not been a bunch of witnesses to it's capture, he'd probably be in ma belly by now.

Friggin' interesting as hell!. I've never known how to prep a turtle like that (and always wanted to try). Thanks so much for sharing Geauxtiga!

I wanna make an etoufee with my next one. Seems like it'd be damn good. Problem is that those f$%kers aren't easy to come by.

I wondered why so much hassle.

Now I know (ARKY TURTLE REG):

quote:

34.09 TAKING OR POSSESSION OF ALLIGATOR SNAPPING TURTLES PROHIBITED It is unlawful to kill, take, attempt to take, or possess alligator snapping turtles, their eggs or other parts from the wild

Very different from LA regs.

With a basic freshwater fishing license, residents can harvest one alligator snapper and unlimited common snappers each day. No size limits.

What bait are you using in your hoop net to catch the snappers?

I use chicken gizzards.

But I use a trot line method.

Geauxtiga and tenfoe use hoops. They would have better answers.

Artificial crawfish bait.

Catfish heads. They stay together better than anything else. I've also caught them on deer roasts, nasty homemade sausage someone gave me, a rooster that kept scratching my mawmaw's car, and an armadillo.

I use my fish guts to bait my holes. Then I use cut fish or chicken livers to bait with.
