This one is good too. It addresses the issue of "straw purchases".

Guy rambles a bit, but he gets the info across.

I have heard both legal and illegal...

quote:

A straw purchase or nominee purchase is any purchase wherein an agent agrees to acquire a good or service for someone who is unable or unwilling to purchase the good or service himself, and the agent transfers the goods/services to that person after purchasing them. Straw purchases are legal except in cases where the ultimate receiver of goods or services uses those goods or services in the commission of a crime with the prior knowledge of the straw purchaser, or if the ultimate possessor is not legally able to purchase the goods/services. The term is mostly used to refer to straw purchases of firearms (since a background check is needed to buy them), but it can also refer to purchases of alcohol, drugs and other products that require an age/background check to be purchased legally. In some cases, the agent in the straw purchase may receive money or recompense from the ultimate possessor.

I would say legal, and I wouldn't hesitate to do such a thing. As far as I'm aware, straw purchasing is only illegal if the person you are acquiring the firearm for is legally prohibited for doing the same themselves.

They did fill out the firearm transfer form though

As far as I know that's completely unnecessary in LA, unless there is some special provision for transfers from L.E. to private citizens, which might be the case with your friends.

Also, keep in mind I'm an engineer, not a lawyer, so any "legal advice" you get from me is most likely worth less than you paid for it.
