The defense looked pretty dominant up until that last Bama drive. What surprised me though was the way they played the rest of the season. Post Bama, the pass rush was gone, the secondary resembled swiss cheese and some teams even got the run going on our vaunted defense.

I can remember a similar late season decline defensively in 2007. I think Dorsey and a couple of others being hurt had something to do with that.

I understand Mingo was less than 100% but otherwise I guess the the loss of the ultimate goal is the best explanation.

Sure, you'd expect a bit more self-motivation but these are kids and they are human.

Started with the Tulane game that year. Then Kentucky exposed us. We got it back on track that year at the SECCG.

LSU's offensive decline

Actually, the opposite is true. LSU's offense played much better over the second half of the season, while the defense played much worse.

Reasons for LSU's defensive decline post Bama 2012

LSU in general has declined after every regular season loss to Alabama lately. 2008, we were 6-2 going into the Bama game, lost it, then went 1-2 the last three. 2009, we were 7-1 going into the Bama game, lost it, and looked bad in the last three games, losing to Ole Miss and nearly losing at home to Arkie, and lost our bowl. 2012, we looked really bad in wins against Ole Miss and Arkie, then lost the bowl.

Were the reasons personnel related, did we get exposed or was it the players not giving the same effort. Some of the things I heard post season about players not giving their all got me thinking about this question.

I'm not sure, but something happened....I'm thinking the Bama game took some wind out the defense. Last 3 games of the year, including Clemson, LSU defense gave up over 440 total yards of offense, including 300+ in passing each game.

Texas A&M had fewer yards on LSU then Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Clemson.
