Gibson Acoustic Guitars vs. Martin/Taylor?

Wandering around Guitar Center today.

I know how they compare price wise. Just wondering about the MB thoughts from people who can actually play more than 5 chords.

Just get what you like. You're not going to get a "bad" Gibson or traditional Martin/Taylor.

I like the acoustic devotion of Martin above all, but I don't know anyone who could make a very reasonable argument against Gibson.

As far as all time workhorse guitars go, I'd argue for the D28. But if you like the J-45, better, for example, who could argue?

Martin will always be the cream of the crop for me. Such a warm resonant tone. Perfect acoustic guitar in my mind.

Taylors I have never liked. Tinny, brassy, not for me.

Gibsons are nice, but the hummingbird always sounded too boomy to me. Other models are great, but not as good as Martin imo.

Depends on what you like. I've played a Gibson SJ200 before and it is probably my favorite acoustic ever. However...I have an old martin 0-15 that comes damn close.

I like the way martin's sound. gibsons are nice and taylors are my least favorite out of the 3.

Not for my own purchase. They are all above my ability and hence my price range.

I own a nice little $250 Alvarez.

Was just wondering what some actual guitar players thought.

I never got the love for Martins - old school Guilds blow them away - regardless of price. I do like the finish and detail on the Martins, but that's about it.

I love the Grand Symphony models and I don't find them tinny. But, then again, I like Ovations, too (is that blasphemy?)

I find the bass in Gibsons to be kind of muddy. My every day player is an old Guild D-35 with a broken shoulder. I gave $100 for her. She sings, though.

the Orginal Martin D-28, which is now HD-28. is the standard that all other guitars are compared too.

taylor make quality products across the board

Gibson has a a different type of sound I could not justify the price tag for.

I have an old Guild I love. But Martins are great too. My brother is a touring musician and he used to play a Martin but now prefers the Gibson Hummingbird.

Martin guitars have a warmer sound while Taylor is bright. In my opinion you have to pay 2k or more to get the true Martin sound, but with a Taylor you can spend half of that for an equal quality sounding product, and even less. My Taylor was around 1100 and I love it; but then again, I prefer the brighter sound for acoustics and think they are better for my style. I do a lot of rythym finger picking (you can adjust brightness by simply changing strings - elixir would be poppy and bright, D'addario would be woody/warmer).

With that said. the upper level Martins are the standard for acoustics, nothing can truly top them. They are just expensive, and really out of a lot of people's price range.

For a Gibson they have more of a woody sound; if that makes any sense. I think they make some quality guitars though, and are very reasonably priced. You really need to sit down and play, play many guitars. Find what is comfortable for you, and find what sound you like.

Can't go wrong with either 3. I've played a good bit on all 3. I personally own a Martin. My dad has a nice Gibson. Neither of us own a Taylor, but I've played on several friends.

My personal ranking would be:
1A-Martin
1B-Gibson
1C-Taylor

All 1's because all are really good guitars. Really splitting hairs on personal styles and preferences on which one you might like the best.

Yep, it really comes down to personal preference.
