Long-running script
Posted by LSUsuperfresh on 3/22 at 12:10 pm
the SECrant and TD keep freezing up on me temporarily, and I keep getting a notification saying it's due to a long-running script error. I click the x next to refresh and it will normally free up a few seconds later, but it is pretty apt to recur again not long after. Is it an issue with my computer?

I've been having this issue for several weeks. TD freezes and I have to close it and reopen it. I get a script message periodically. TD has been slow for me for a long time. No problems with any other websites but this one. No problems on the mobile version.

How do you get rid of this sort of thing?

what browsers are y'all using?

Wild guess here, but your browser might be choking on one of the ads. I would try a different browser for a while, and also run a few malware scans just to be on the safe side.

Mine is IE and I have to use that on this computer for work reasons.

Sometimes, it times out. It was going well and then it froze again a minute ago.

I've run malware and it turned up nada.

If you aren't allowed to install software, try Chrome Portable. It is meant to be installed on a thumb drive, but it should work if you just install it to your user directory.

It's my computers and I can load what I want, but to connect to certain programs at the office on my laptop, I have to have IE. I know nothing about such things. I doss my IT guy says.

Oh, well that makes this easier. Installing Chrome won't get rid of IE. Actually I probably have 3 or 4 browsers on every computer I have.

Install Chrome.

When you want to do basic web browsing or playing around, use it.

When you need to do work stuff, use IE.

I use Chrome and it's been doing the same thing. I think some of the ads at the top are corrupt. I just noticed this morning that when the Lexus ad appears, it freezes up on me.

Then you guys might have an over aggressive malware scanner or something along those lines. It will probably be difficult to impossible to diagnose this online unless we get lucky.

You could try keeping a task manager window open and see if a particular process hogs the cpu when this happens.

How do you read the CPU? I pulled it up and see some spikes in the graph but have no idea how to interpret it.

The chart just shows overall usage, you need to click the tab called "processes" and sort them by the cpu% column so that processes using the most cpu are on top.

When TD locks up, you might see a process jump to the top using lots of cpu. Or you might not. I'm really just taking a stab in the dark here.

You could also try disabling all your IE add-ons and see if the problem goes away.

Really, really hard to solve flaky problems like this.

Thanks. I'm not a tech so I don't know what most of this means. I'll try to figure out how to find the add ons. I don't know how to do that or what to delete.

You don't need to delete anything. There is actually a shortcut to IE with add-ons disabled right in your start menu. Just click your start button and type internet explorer, and there should be one with (No Add-ons) next to it. Fire that up and browse TD for a while, see if the problem goes away.

I found the add ons and then I googled and ran a microsoft fix it programe to disable addons that might slow IE. IE is only slow on TD, but I'm going to see if I notice a difference, now. Thanks for the help. I might be back if it didn't work, though! Appreciate the suggestions.
