would an NCAA or pro-player be banned for something similar here?

Greek player Giorgos Katidis banned for life after celebrating goal with Nazi salute

Katidis, 20, a former captain of Greece's Under-19 team, made the salute in celebrating his winning goal in a 2-1 Super League victory over lowly Veria late on Saturday.
"The player's action to salute to spectators in a Nazi manner is a severe provocation, insults all the victims of Nazi bestiality and injures the deeply pacifist and human character of the game," EPO said in a statement.
Katidis was heavily criticised by political parties and fans on Twitter and Facebook following the incident at the Athens Olympic Stadium. Sunday marks the 70th anniversary of Greek Jew deportations in Nazi concentration camps in the Second World War.
AEK have asked Katidis to explain himself and will then decide his future at a board meeting next week. Katidis denied he gave a Nazi salute. "I am not a fascist and would not have done it if I had known what it meant," Katidis said on his Twitter account.

I think for life is excessive in a big way, even if it was what he meant.

Seems excessive. Euros obviously hate free speech.

I don't think its that they hate free speech nearly as much as it has to do with a huge, concerted effort across Europe to curtail racism in futbol. Its pretty out of hand, actually.

He is probably being disingenuous, the fascist salute has become popular in Greece with the anti immigrant parties, Greece has a problem with the economy and crime and many see illegals as part of the problem.

I doubt it has anything to do with the holocaust or Hitler even tangentially, it is right wing, it would be the same as pinning all socialists as adherents of Stalin or mao for eternity based upon their abhorrent behavior.

Profound!

It was an analogy, I doubt anyone besides yourself thought he was suggesting they were exactly the same thing.

I understand that, but it was a bad analogy.

Yes. One is a clenched fist.

Yeah, he wasn't too bright for doing this but the overreactions are a bit silly.

You must not pay much attention to European soccer's racism. This player was banned from his national team, which he has never even played for on the senior level, so it's not like it's a big loss for Greece. He can still play for any club.

Teams get fined more for criticizing refs than they do for their fans chanting racists remarks. That precedant shows initiative. FIFA's President doesn't even think it's a problem. Americans are far more cultured than Europeans.

I am not even against sign of white pride. But there is no way to ever separate the nazi salute from the holocaust, and the black power salute doesn't have that kind of baggage.
