Science Fiction Universes that got it right/wrong

ie, created a "Future" that's most accurate with realistic technology, ect, and those that didn't.

Got it right:
Children of Men Advertising projected on buildings, everyone driving little bitch cars. Kinda cheated though, as 21 years of SHTF really slows down advancement.

Got it wrong:
BTT2. Hoverboards only 30 years in the future. Come on.

Enders Game. Written in 1985 and talks about how global message boards shape world politics

Aside from precogs, I think Minority Report will be shockingly accurate to portraying the future.

Snow Crash - Not all that accurate overall but it more or less created the term "avatar" as is used by the internet. Also, it had a program called "Earth" that was remarkably similar to Google Earth and almost certainly the reason they chose that name. Neal Stephenson was well ahead of the curve when writing about the internet.

To be fair that isn't exactly a creative name for a program that gives satellite views of earth

Wasnt there a bunch of shite BTTF2 got right though?

Also, I don't think that Sci-Fi writers are all that prescient. They're creative people that come up with cool ideas, and then a bunch of nerds start working on ways to make them a reality. They're not necessarily predicting what will be invented, but giving people ideas to start working on.

"Google Earth can be traced directly back to a small company named Autometric, ...

Autometric President Dan Gordon ...

Gordon was a huge fan of the ‘Earth’ program described in Neal Stephenson's sci-fi classic Snow Crash. Indeed, a Google Earth co-founder claimed that Google Earth was modeled after Snow Crash"

Clipped out of a Wiki article on Google Earth.

Weren't they using Ipads in Back to the Future II? The Cubs winning the World Series was way off though

The only thing that's jumping out is the wall TV, instant news and the love of 80's nostalgia. Everything else seems like it's not going to pan out in time.

And I guess Elvis Dumervil's agent recently got a "You're fired!" fax.

In many ways the power of computers is consistently underestimated. Our computers do about as much or more as any computer from a 1960's or 70's sci-fi show set hundreds of years in the future. Think of the Enterprise computer on TOS. Yeah, it talked but it was slow and had many useless flashing lights.

Speaking of TOS, their communicators aren't as useful as our cell phones.

The Dick Tracy wrist watch videophones are probably do-able and they may even have them out there. But it never really caught on. Not practical to use I guess.

What does TOS mean? You said Enterprise, so is it Star Trek?

TOS= The Original Series.

The one with Kirk and Spock.

You're spot on with this. Star Trek didn't predict flip phones, flip phones were created because Star Trek communicators opened that way. More often than not, modern technology is inspired by and modeled after some previous science fiction creation.

This is so weird because my dad and I were discussing this same topic a few days ago. We both agreed that our world today is created from the ideas in movies.

Planet of the Apes has been way off thus far, but I am not sure of the actual timeline.

Gattica is pretty plausible. Genetic engineering "God Babies" and such.

Shutting my own whore mouth as I type but Escape from NY was kind of silly, but I still consider Snake Plissken among the all-time badasses.

Anyone remember Looker? Although a pretty marginal movie, the plot was interesting. Basically an evil ad firm digitizing perfect models to create perfect commercials and brainzap erryone into buying their client's sh#t.
