| re: ESPN: "UT has chance to build Louisiana pipeline" Texas has not recruited La except to cherry pick. They are as big a threat as Bama when it comes to recruiting Louisiana should they invest the resources. Ask any high school coach. Geeks reading recruiting sites like Rivals are the dumb asses. | Patrick, check out the history of Texas' recruiting in Louisiana.Personally,I don't understand the lure to play in Big 12,but Texas has signed players in Louisiana that LSU coveted.I can assure you,Tiger coaches hated losing Davis last year. He was a must get,and you will see the effects this season. Would love to meet you in person to help you determine my intellect. Reply Back to Top |

quote: When was this? The 1990s or 1900s? I can figure which one. Geigar was late 1990s Cole Pittman was 1997. So basically the only guy even remotely relevant they've taken that has yet to even play is Torshiro Davis. 1 guy in 10 years. OMG. Reply Back to Top |
| Does this mean they have waived the white flag to A&M? Reply Back to Top |

Posted by CourseyCorridor on 3/5 at 12:31 am to Bernie Moore Things have changed during the current SEC run of dominance. There was a time where the Big 12 could be sold as equal to the SEC (whether it was true or not, but it was close enough where it could be sold). Not any more. That said, I'm surprised people are discounting the Porter factor. He was a good recruiter at LSU and he has connections here. And I like living in Baton Rouge, but Austin is a WAY nicer city than my beloved BR. Personally, I don't see how any Texas prospect could pick College Station over Austin as a place to live for four years (although, I must say I CAN see picking Kevin Sumlin over an aging Mack Brown). If I'm LSU, I'm not losing sleep over this, but I'm aware of it and I respect it. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Austin is a fine city--I personally think one of the best in America. And right now, that's Texas' only card. But kids don't pick schools because of the fun city in which it's located. Does it help? Of course. But if living in a thriving metropolis or a culturally stimulating place was a deciding or even significant factor in a kid's decision, they'd go to Tulane instead of LSU, Vanderbilt over Tennesse, or Georgia Tech rather than Georgia. They'd have chosen Pitt over Penn. State, Minnesota over Michigan, or Northwestern over Notre Dame. The schools in Tuscalosa, Gainesville, Lincoln, Norman, and Eugene wouldn't have gotten their programs off the ground. And UCSD, Pepperdine, UNLV, and St. John's would have illustrious powerhouse programs (rather than no program or an obscure one). Kids want to win, play in front of big crowds, and be on TV. They want to see evidence indicating a strong possibility of having all three. If they can have that in Austin are they going to choose to live in CS? As a general matter, probably not. But they're not choosing UT so they can tell their grand kids they swam in Hamilton Pool or partied balls at ACL four years straight while Sumlin and co. competed for championships. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Just think it's odd when people suggest the best players allow bright lights and fast times to polarize their decision. In short, it's very clear why kids are choosing to settle for College Station in lieu of Austin. And you touched on it in your parenthetical. Reply Back to Top |
Posted by CourseyCorridor on 3/5 at 2:37 am to DWag215 You are right. It's just rare that a major power with all the resources is also in a cool, thriving metropolis. LSU is in BR, not New Orleans. Illinois is in Champaignr, not Chicago, and so on. Texas has everything lined up to succeed and it is really an indictment of Mack that they haven't gone 10-2 or better EVERY year. | Texas has the ability to be a major threat in Louisiana. They have taken the best players in the past. _________________________________________________- Bernie u are misinformed if u think LSU is sweating Texas in recruiting. Other than a Shreveport school, when have they come in and took someone we really needed? And how long ago was that? They wd get a few when their program was elite but that's no longer the case. They stole one guy in Davis that we really wanted 2 yrs ago. All we did in response was just go into Alabama and take Alexander who is better anyway. Even little Nicky with La and LSU ties rarely gets a guy we really want and he's won 3/4 Nat'l titles. Dont buy into the hype. Look at their roster of La kids versus our roster of Alabama kids. Not much difference if any and their program is solid unlike the Horns. The Texas program is in decline, they will have a very difficult time getting anyone from La and if they do it will most likely be a shreveport school only. On the other hand LSU has been taking players from Texas for years even when the Horns were good. Now that the Texas program is decline, the LSU pipeline from Texas is and will continue to be busier. You believe they are a major threat? Where's your proof? Who do u think they will get next yr from La? PS Tell Texas to hold OU to under 40 one yr and we might just give em a guy. | Texas has not signed many Louisiana recruits because they have not had to leave the state to find quality players.Texas like Alabama has been successful in Louisiana when they target a top recruit. The Agges are riding a wave now due to Manzell more than Sumlin. Texas is the number one school in the state and will get who they want. The problem the Longhorns have had is their white QBs from schools where there is huge talent advantage has not worked out. Please note the talent Texas has sent to NFL. Look at their recruiting class rankings compared to Aggies. Look at their record under Brown and compare it to aTm during same time period. Applewhite as a better QB than anyone LSU had during same time period. Once again geeks, ask any hs coach or college coach in Louisiana if Texas has the ability to be strong players in Louisiana.Ask your coaches or former coaches. Reply Back to Top |
quote: FWIW, LSU and Texas have the same number of active players in the NFL - 44. That's tied for third most of any school (Miami 54, USC 48). After this year's draft, I expect LSU will have more active players in the NFL than Texas. LINK ETA: Just to round out the top 10: t3. Ohio State - 44 6. California - 41 7. Georgia - 40 8. Iowa - 35 t9. Alabama - 33 t9. Penn State - 33 t9. Tennessee - 33 This post was edited on 3/5 at 11:50 am Reply Back to Top |
quote: A little anecdote from a 2013 OL named Caleb Benenoch. He was offered by both Texas and TAMU. He waited way too long to make a decision, and both schools moved on. He signed with UCLA. He tweeted this last weekend: quote: quote: This guy was recruited by both programs. He disagrees with you. quote: TAMU's '14 class has 10 commits, 5 of which hold offers from Texas. Texas has 8 commits, two of which were coveted by TAMU. quote: Texas has had a lot of highly ranked classes. And before 2013, it had been nearly 10 years since TAMU's class was ranked higher. But I'm not sure what it matters. It's not like the 2013 or 2014 kids care, at least not judging by their commitments. quote: I don't know what this has to do with the discussion. Today Mack's a lame-duck coach; and today Sumlin is revered by kids and coaches across the state. But yes, Mack had a very successful tenure while his counterparts in TAMU did not. quote: Yes they do. But not right now, and not in the foreseeable future. Reply Back to Top |
| Sure Texas has a chance to recruit a few players from Louisiana this year. However, their chances with the elites available seem to be very slim since they are not listied as leaders by any of them. Texas could still get some good players from Louisiana this year, but those players will be players who did not receive offers from LSU for the most part. The problem Texas has is that taking non-elite players from Louisiana prevents them from taking similar players from Texas, and that is something Texas can't afford to do if it wants to maintain the recruiting strategy that Mack Brown has used since his arrival at Texas, which is take the best players available from Texas and fill in with few elite out of state players. Mack Brown has to ask himself if chasing Louisiana players is worth the risk of alienating some players from Texas? Reply Back to Top |
| Poodlebrain,I agree with much of what you are saying.Texas has a winning strategy. Like Bama, they are the most popular school in their state and will not be down for long.Aggies don't want to talk about the past but the opinions of a few recruits today is not indicitive of future recruiting efforts. I believe Aggie fans are placing too much emphasis on their first Qtr vs Bama and their win against OU.UT is a very powerful brand, and I hope they stay in Texas. As I've said before, they have rarely targeted Louisiana kids, but the ones they got were blue chippers. No LSU rejects. Since they have sent as many guys to NFL as LSU,they can be just as effective as LSU recruiting out of state. LSU has never gotten a player out of Texas that UT wanted.LSU can't say the same. Brown told Russell Shepard he would not be a QB at Texas thus Shep commited to LSU because Miles promised he could try QB position. After a year,RS knew he was no college QB.Remember Mike Davis decommiting from LSU after he finally got a Texas offer. I hope you guys are right and Texas never becomes a player in Louisiana Reply Back to Top Refresh |
