The long-awaited Prospect Bridge in Houma was set to open to traffic today after a series of construction delays that have repeatedly aggravated local motorists.

The new bridge has remained closed to traffic pending the arrival of mechanical and electrical components needed to complete the project, the state Transportation Department says in a news release. Transportation workers recently performed an inspection of the new bridge and determined that it could be safely opened to traffic until the contractor receives the new parts.

Agency officials said they expect the new parts to arrive in the next six to seven weeks. Once received, the bridge will close to traffic for about a week while the parts are being installed and tested.

The work will include replacing plugging switches on the upper machinery platforms, which act to reverse the main drive motors when the bridge deck is being lowered and into place, the agency says. This component of the bridge acts as a secondary braking system that helps the bridge deck lower gently into place.

It's only a year behind schedule.

It says it's been under construction since 2010, that can't be right. It feels like it's been 6-7 years atleast.

It is a $28,000,000 project. By having it open for 7 weeks till the new parts come in its going to save them $269,500.@ $5,500 daily fine. This bridge should have never been a lift bridge anyway, there is not enough boat traffic to warrant that.

This particular contractor never finsishes a bridge on time. They have the same problems going on in Larose.

Wasn't the one that was there before a lift bridge though?

Yes there was a 2 lane bridge, this one is 5. However, if it opened 10 times a year it opened plenty. There is only about a 4 mile stretch from there to the Presquell Isle Bridges and neither of them open. They could have developed a marina (which the already have the downtown marina) for all the people who have boats in that stretch. For a lot less money and time

They're probably not counting the tear-down of the old bridge and a lot of prep work before the actual bridge contstruction started. I think it was more like 2008 when traffic was closed off to the bridge.

Wrong, traffic/bridge was closed on May 24, 2010.

Agreed; however, Bayou Terrebonne is still considered a navigable waterway at that location through the eyes of the federal government. So, building a fixed bridge across would have literally taken an act of congress.
