Houston is the place to be, but good news for Nola...and even BR

quote:

Houston, Dallas, Baton Rouge, and Tampa have seen stronger rates of growth in the numbers of educated people moving into their areas, more so than such cities as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco.

quote:

The region is now home to several of the country’s leading ports, led by Houston and New Orleans, which also boast the first- and second-fastest growth in custom district traffic among the top five districts, outpacing New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit.

But clearly Houston is the winner:

quote:

Houston, the clear center of the Third Coast economy, has emerged as one of the country’s megacities. Over the past decade, Houston has had one of the largest increases in employment of any major metropolitan area—up 15 percent between 2000 and 2011.

quote:

Of course the dominant factor in cost of living is housing, so this strongly validates Texas’ free market approach allowing supply to meet demand (if avoiding the housing crash didn’t already prove that point). And Houston’s very substantial $12k advantage over even other Texas cities points to the incredible value of no-zoning in keeping housing and other costs of living low (including commercial office and retail costs). For more on how that works, check out my Opportunity Urbanism op-ed here. And that leads me to end with this awesome graphic that I just love (hat tip to Josh).

I always enjoy a weekend trip to Houston... not sure how I'd feel about living there year-round.

Nashville has lots of jobs as well. Barely any low income areas and we are growing fast.

And its 100000000000000000000000000x cooler than anything in Texas outside of Austin.

Houston has its moments. You have to pick your spots.

This is coming from someone who grew up there and later spent 7+ years in Austin.

meh, never been to nashville so i can't really comment.

i used to hate houston myself before moving here...but you just get used to it.

traffic is retarded as shite though, and people just don't know how to react when driving during a drizzling rainfall.

I felt the same way until I moved to Houston. Now I enjoy weekend trips back to Louisiana, but I am ready to get the frick out of that backwards arse place after a few days

thats everywhere but the Northwest.

Nashville has the pussiest drivers on the planet. Everyone is in hybrids going 10 below the limit.

This is the opposite of conventional thinking. There are plenty of better places to visit/vacation, but it's a great place to live.

+1

used to make weekly trips back when i first moved.

Now, the only redeeming part about the trip is the pit stop at Don's to pick up some boudin

I don't think I would like to live inside the loop. Too many people and too busy. I'm very happy in the Seabrook area though.

Same for me....but Houston isn't even the same Houston that it was in 2006 when I moved here. I live in the loop, tons of new development, new restaurants, theatre, night life, live music, etc, etc.

shopping for a place in the loop now...can't imagine living outside of it, or in the burbs to be honest.
