| Same story here. I traveled 90% for 5 years. One day I went to get on my next flight & completely froze. It's frustrating to have such an irrational fear. I've done just about everything to get over it but nothing short of zoning out completely on Xanax works. I plan to take flying lessons next to confront the fear. It's definitely a control issue. | Of all the fears out there, fear of heights is probably among the more reasonable. I personally enjoy flying enough to fly a Cessna occasionally but can see how someone might get nervous. Reply Back to Top |
quote:I wasn't that abrupt. I gradually began to feel anxiety after years of nothing. But, I've only felt it during takeoffs and landings. So, my theory is that, as I've grown older, my body processes gas more slowly and the gas hangs around in my bowels longer than it used to. Combine that with the effects of altitude changes during takeoff and landing, and kaflooey, you have adult onset fear of flying. Yes, because I'm a genius. Reply Back to Top |
I have kind of same problem . For me its the take off and going in for landing that i hate. I always read books on flights ,it helped a little. I have gotten so nervous that once i could see anything in front of me , everyhing was green and black. I could 'nt see the stewardess or even the pages to the book in front of me. quote: and fear of flying aren't related, try wearing earplugs, bring something to keep you occupied from the minute your get in your seat, book, ipad, etc., this helps me, I don't have a fear of flying, just general disgust for the people that are on the airplane with me Reply Back to Top

Same here, used to fly all the time for work and then all of a sudden i have a horrible fear of flying. Me and the wife had a rough flight to Vegas last year, so that might have something to do with it. Go to your doctor, or get a street Rx, and get some type of benzo. Eat two of them, have a beer or 3 and go sleepy sleeps. Reply Back to Top
OP. You aren't afraid of flying. Your'e afraid of crashing! Reply Back to Top
more xanax, valium, etc have a couple cocktails prior to boarding as well Reply Back to Top
I have the same experience. I've flown probably 20 times in my life, and was completely fine with it from 1-19. The last one I was on, had a bad panic attack in mid flight. I attribute that to being older and have a little one depending on me, not feeling as invincible as I once did, 9/11, watching those damn youtube videos of plane crashes... Reply Back to Top
Are you Claustrophobic? Most of the people I have worked with who have a fear of flying are more fearful that they are bottled up in that tight space with no control. I bet you are the guy that HAS TO drive. Reply Back to Top
I hate flying, but can't avoid it sometimes. Just make peace with the universe or whatever higher power you believe in and throw yourself to the wind, so to speak. Other than that, I got nothin. I sure don't medicate myself. I want to have my wits about me at all times. Reply Back to Top
It seems more people have plane phobias nowadays. I think it is too much too deal with the mere thought of mechanical failure and some look terrorist on the plane. I would have to get some serious drugs and every vodka bottle on the plane, nowadays. I had a touch and go at Philly and have been in an emergency landing but the touch and go did it for me. I havta drug up and won't fly unless I have to. Reply Back to Top
Hop in a 150 for a couple of flights and it will cure you of having any trouble on large, commercial planes. Reply Back to Top
If there are Mechanical Problems, the Plane can't just pull over and Park. Reply Back to Top

Seriously, Xanax is your best bet. Don't get drunk before. You'll get dehydrated and feel like shite. Take a Xanax and bring something interactive to distract you. Crossword/Sodoku or a video game on an iPad. Reading won't distract you enough. If you think you're claustrophobic get an aisle seat. if you like to be able to see whats going on, get a seat behind the wing. Happy thoughts, you'll be fine. I'd much rather be in an airplane than a car after 11pm in BR. Reply Back to Top
