Phobia spin off: Fear of Flying

I have to travel next month for work to Denver. About 5 years ago I went from cool as a cucumber to complete loosing my mind in a plane. Last time I flew from NO to Orlando took 2 1mg Xanax and it did NOTHING! Need some OT frequent flyer tips to curb my pusification. Something more than get hammered before the flight.

It's all in your head. Study up on the safety of flying.

Yeah i agree its the safest way to travel

BUT

There is no shoulder to pull over on of there is a problem

BTW I flew many times as a youngn into my teens with no issue. Now in my 40's and i would rather have my eyes gouged out.

I agree. Looked at what causes turbulence and all of the safety stats and nothing. I think it's more of a control thing.

If you know how to play solitaire or other card games, do it! It clears the mind and makes your brain think. Word puzzles and such also help get your mind off of the flight.

True, but there are hundreds if not thousands of airports to divert to. I flew around 80 flights last year and just got off a plane this afternoon and never had a problem other than some turbulence and a diversion for weather.

Do you take Xanax frequently? Wondering about high tolerance being an issue. I take 3.5 mg Xanax to fly & usually sleep through the flight. I rarely remember anything after security.

Bring a laptop/ipad/kindle or something to distract you and keep your mind occupied.

When I was offshore, before I moved into the office I would fly without issue. Even enjoy it. Same deal about 5 years ago something clicked. So after that I would either work it out to boat it or fly in a single engine Lone Ranger where I could sit up front with the pilot. For some reason if I could see the instrument panel I was better. Not normal but better, even though I couldn't begin to fly it.

I am sad to be very bad at flying. Like have little panic attacks. Then I took a job that had me flying almost every week, and I got over it. I don't know the secret, other than it became so routine and I got tired of being scared every week. Drinking did help the first few months.

I fly 65-70k miles a year now. You just have to know that nothing is going to happen.

That happened to me as well, and I've flown hundreds of times. What do you suppose causes that?
