| Thoughts on the golf swing Posted by titleist71 on 2/13 at 12:50 am My current thoughts on the full golf swing I’m playing the best golf in my life in the beginning of my fourth season. These are my current golf thoughts and I wanted to see if I could get them down in writing. My last two rounds I shot an 87 and an 80. My previous best was a 90 from 2 weeks ago, being stuck at mid to low 90’s for more than a year. -At Address Have an athletic stance slightly bent over the hips, weight centered thru head -Backswing With neutral grip, allow arms to stay connected as torso rotates the chest, arms, hands and club on the horizontal angle with respect to the angle the ground, to keep club on path and maintain fluidity begin to transfer weigh to right leg, this will also keep the club in front of the torso and the club from moving inside. Not transferring weight will result in a reverse pivot Once the club shaft is parallel to the ground begin to raise arms, keeping the hands in front of the chest. More distance b/w hands and chest is better but stay connected. Keep turning torso on the horizontal angle until you can’t turn anymore. Weight should be on inside arch-heel of right foot at the top. -Downswing Initiate downswing by swinging arms on an in-to-out path. The downswing path is possible by correctly setting the club at the top, thru true torso rotation. Start transition smoothly, that makes it easier to allow right elbow drop, it also will force the torso to do the unwinding. -Impact and after Flex hands. Slightly reach for ball, not necessary just down but out towards the ball. Continue club along same path and finish the swing, weight on outside ball of left foot while poising. Reply Back to Top |

| At 7:42am? The address and downswing comment is the most accurate, I think. I start my hands at about 45 degrees instead of the 90 that you go with but I also maintain a lead on the club head all the way thru impact, so it doesn't really matter. Reply Back to Top |

quote: Pretty much everything you have is correct except for this statement. You should never start your downswing by actively doing anything with your arms. You'll end up with a lot of shots with no power, or pulls/ pull hooks. The downswing is initiated by "the bump" --- a slight bump of your hips towards the target. This allows your head to remain behind the ball and the arms to drop freely into "the slot" to hit the ball from the inside. | Wayyyy to many swing thoughts and only read the paragraph after address. Most great players only have 1-3 swing thoughts at the max. Don't think about it so much an just get the ball in the hole Reply Back to Top |

If you're at a driving range and your only swing thought is hit the ball, you're the one that needs to adjust their process. If you're unable to transition into playing without these thoughts muddling you on the course, you have a mental problem in your golf game. You practice with these thoughts so you do it enough and it turns into muscle memory; if you saw me on the range practicing you'd think I was a 20+ handicapper because of all the mishits and odd things I'm doing trying to get my body to remember the movements. Then with the last 10-20 balls I just swing and get the confidence back. Obviously warming up before you play is different than that eta: that all seems pretty good except for maybe this quote: Be careful turning "until you can't turn anymore" because it may lead to over swinging once you get comfortable doing the proper move. You don't wan to be the guy who looks like he's trying to hit it to the moon every swing. I try to keep the club connected to the chest by way of the triangle I'd say my shortgame and putting is helping my handicap, full swing needs the most improvement, particularly getting better at the subtleties when swinging the driver and woods Reply Back to Top |

Just don't take that crap with you on the course. During a round, your only thought should be the target, then grip it an rip it. The hardest thing for me lately is trusting that my weight shift/turn will put my hands at the correct impact position, without me doing anything consciously. My best shots are coming when i just get to the top, begin the downswing and forget my hands are even there. I just turn and try to trust my pivot will do the job. This creates the most lag. The correct golf swing is all about lag... get rid of tension, light grip pressure, correct posture at adress, and using your arms/hands consciously as little as possible. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I would disagree. On the range, it is only effective and efficient with a minimal, but multiple, amount of swing thoughts. On the course, only one, maybe two, should be utilized. Having none and "gripping it and ripping it" will get you in some trouble, most of the time leading you to try and "fix" on the course. A principle I use is a 4:1 rule, meaning for every 4 thoughts on the range, I use 1 on the course. If there are more, I will think two, but in doing so both thoughts have to be very minor.
