| Advice on purchase of a new handgun Posted by dneverever Long story short, I do curative work for the oil companies which require me to walk in the woods. Yesterday while walking on an old logging road I came across three pigs. One of the pigs charged and I haul arse into a deer stand. I waited for over 40 minutes for the pigs to leave. Im usually several yards from my truck when walking and barely have a cell signal. Any recommendations for a handgun in this situation? I talk to some friends and they say buy a 9 mm, 40, 44, 45, or a 357 so I pretty confuse. Never owned a handgun, have big hands If that matters, and budget is around 1000. | For self defense against pigs I suggest either a .357 or .44mag revolver. .357 is on the light end of what I'd want for busting up pigs, but it'll be much easier to tote and shoot than a .44 mag A .44 mag will kill the shite out of anything you can hit with it. Reply • Back to Top |

| Exact reason I got a 10mm Glock 20. Don't really have to worry about it getting dirty. I had dirt, sticks, tree paint, etc all over mine and it fired perfectly. You are going to be shooting them in the noggin when they are charging you(hardest part of body). I wanted the biggest bang in the smallest package. It is a full size gun, but fits my hands perfectly because they are wide/long. I have one of those OWB kydex holsters that clips to behind where your belt goes, and it is very comfortable to walk with. I used to walk with a Camelback, clipboard, compass dangling, and blaze orange vest with stuff in the pockets and it never bothered me. Always had easy access to gun. Get both and you won't regret it. Dont even bother looking at anything else. Eta: I used to typically walk 3-8 miles a day, and had some where I walked 15mi. | Handguns only offer two advantages over a long gun. 1 concealment 2 able to fire with only one hand concealment should not be an issue to you in a remote environment I don't know what kind of work you do weather you always have to carry a load in your hands. Rifles and shotguns are easier to hit targets with, and pack much more power than a handgun. Reply • Back to Top |

| I agree that 357 would be a good choice, but remember that when you get the longer barrels those beeshes get heavy as hell. 6" is as long as I would get. Reply • Back to Top |

Travis Haley might be able to deploy his carbine in that situation, but I'd rather be able to point and shoot with a gun I can pull from the holster in no time flat.
