How careful are y'all about expiration dates?

I pretty much use them as guidelines, while one of my co-workers won't eat, drink, or use anything past it's expiry date. She even questions it on the day of.

I just threw out some wheat germ (unopened until today) with an expiration date of Aug. 2011. It still tasted, smelled and looked fine, but figured the nutritional value might have been compromised.

I also threw out some Caladryl lotion last week that expired in 1990. I really should look in the medicine cabinets more often.

I smell stuff before I throw it out if it is close to the date or a few days after usually...

Milk is the biggie. If it says "Exp on 3-15" it's probably gone bad on 3-14.

I usually give my milk a few days after the Exp date.

I find this is more true with whole milk for whatever reason

Or if you don't keep your refrigerator cold enough

Unless at the camp or similar circumstance... I think that the number of times and the length of time an icebox door is left open seems to affect the length of milk expiration..

eta: and as someone said, temp kept in the icebox.

I used to always give milk the old sniff test. If it smelled fine, it's probably safe for consumption I do miss milk..

Half and half is good long past the expiry, in my experience.

totally dependent on product.

I'm a smeller. Bad odor gets it thrown out.

Microbiologists friends in graduate school did a study for USDA on hamburger. found even when it was almost chocolate and smelled pretty rank that it (microbially) was OK. Of course that was back during pre Bad News E-coil days. There are bugs out there now that weren't here yet when I was at the university. As I remember back then, we wore dark blue robes with yellow stars comets and astrological signs, and tall pointed dark blue hats. Our chief research efforts involved converting lead to gold.

I get calls at work all the time concerning expiration dates. I know the product has not gone bad, but our stability testing says I must say that it is past teh expiratin date and we cannot guarantee it has not degraded.

So a word of advice - don't call the manufacturer and ask if you can use stuff past expiration. Those lawyer guys on TV want soomeone to tell you it's OK to use past the dating, because then he (the plaid jacket lawyer) wins the lawsuit when you get the runs and sue the manufacturer.

Yeah, it is whole milk. I buy the little bottles because we don't use that much milk and it cuts down on waste. BTW, I keep a small stand up thermometer in the back of my fridge just to make sure the temp is OK.

3-4 days after the expiration day for milk is still ok.

I can eat leftovers from a week ago as long as its been refrigerated.

I have been on the road a few times if that counts. I have been London, but sadly, never to Cambridge. Been to Harvard at Cambridge, MA. But no degree from there.

Was on the road yesterday.

May go to Sam's today. Doing more important stuff at the moment - Drinking third cup of coffee and thinking about expiration dating and lawyers.

Depends on if frozen vs. refrigerated vs. canned vs. dry goods.

With dairy, refrigerated meat and canned goods I tend to stick close to the expiration date.

I guess I shouldn't reveal that I ate yogurt a year past its expiration date?

I always pour the liquid (whey) off of past expiration yogurt before eating it. If it has green fuzzy fungus on the top, I do not eat it.

Yes, I am persnickity

This had no fuzzy stuff. I don't know how or why.

I have a pretty decent nose. I give most things the smell test. Most things are fine beyond the expiration date and sometimes things fail well before the expiration date.

Once found some 10 year old Parmesan cheese in my dad's pantry. He was still using it.
