Back during the Cold War, Americans saw all Russians and Communists as bad guys. They weren't - most were just people, but that is how we portrayed them. I know that there are a lot of great people in America, but are we still a good country? Are you still proud to be an American? Or, have things changed?

I just wonder how much people know about their country.. I love apple pie, Chevrolet, and baseball. But that doesn't keep me from learning the truth.

We shite on other continents so we can have 99 cent hamburgers on every street corner and fresh bananas in every grocery store.

Iran elected it's first leader through the democratic process and we went in and took him out and implanted a dictator that would remain for the next 20+ years. Now that is totally wiped from the collective American conscious, and we think we're going around the world trying to spread 'democracy', give me a break.

An entire book(s) can cover all that we've done that is evil, hardly anything a forum post could cover. Enjoy telling me that I'm wrong.

America is still the greatest nation on earth. And as long as the government leaves us alone we will be #1

It's not about kicking anyones ass. It's about stripping places of their resources for our gain. That is just insane, and not necessary.

We rob places of their food so we can have our abundance. Totally wrong, that has nothing to do with being 'hoorah' republican capitalist or soft hearted liberal, it's basic fundamental human knowledge to know that is wrong.

What's hilarious is we have all these 'feed the hungry' charities, we drop a nickel or a buck in them to feel like we're doing our part, yet are totally unaware of how we're stripping these places of their food.

I get having your mindset as a way to joke about things because there is nothing anyone can really do about it, but if you don't realize the insanity of our ways, then you're as outdated as the old men who thought slavery was okay.

well....

let's see:

we kill people anonymously from drones, including children

we operate in the airspace of other country without respect to their sovereignty

we imprison people from all over the world in secret prisons

we wage cyberwar on other countries while stating that if other countries did it to us it would be considered an act of war

we conduct black operations in countries that haven't invited us.

we conduct black operations to destabilize nations and economies.

shall I go on?

Perhaps we should also start looking into our history to see if we were ever the "good guys." For instance, remember that time we basically stole Hawaii?

People love making this statement, yet it's not really that true. Plus, how high is the bar? Most countries are in disarray, and in many cases because of another states aggression.

We are 16 trillion in debt (and growing), with a monetary system that is designed to go into this kind of debt (yet no one understands why). We have people flooding our borders, disintegrating culture, increasing obesity and fat useless people, a pathetic education system. Just because we spend the next generations money on the finest military technology doesn't make us the greatest nation... and if this is the greatest nation, it's so damn bad it's in no position to be boasted about.

And the OPs question was is America a "good" country, meaning morally does it operate amongst the world community in a respectable manner. Not is it the #1 nation by consumer standards.

Good and bad are subjective constructs.

What makes us the #1 country in the world? Playing devils advocate...

Yes. This is my question. I did not ask if we were powerful. I asked if we were good. If we are not good, then what are we using our power for? To promote our own advancement. That would be understandable if we were a good country because what is good for America could be considered to be good for the world. But, if we are not a good country, then promoting our own power is not a good thing for the rest of the world - or for us.

If America is good, then we should support it and advocate for it. If America is not good, then what is our responsibility? You can't just get a pass on "following orders" or being patriotic. You have to actually hold to standards of good and evil despite what your culture says. Nurmeburg taught is that, didn't it?

I say this to family members and those willing to listen. I like what you're saying. Hopefully a few eyes will read that and get the picture.

Yeah, and let's never forget about Operation Paperclip and the American Eugenics Movement, which the National Socialists in Germany got their idea from.

We're a global force for good

The navy tells us so

Those commercials are great.

I love the ones with Marines (or is it Army) where all they show is food on the planes and them landing in the middle east running to give the people food. No guns being fired, no bombs, no drones, just food. Gotta love it.

Then by your own reckoning, name some countries you consider good, Mograyback. I'm curious.

If you saw an earlier post, you'll notice I said the bar isn't too high. A lot of countries have major problems, which is why I'm pretty much against the State entity in general, I'm a libertarian (not the Ron Paul variety).

I know why you're asking this question, I'm not saying America is so bad and others are great. The fact that there aren't many truly good countries out there doesn't absolve America from it's pathetic behavior.

America is both good and bad.

When disaster strikes, who is there first? Whose military is often providing humanitarian missions with helicopters?

When there is a disaster, the world often looks to the US to lead.

But by the same token, this token has done some bad things to protect its interests or its presumed interests.

We might be considered the best and the worst country in the world for that reason.
