Staining/sealing cypress outdoor chairs
Posted by TheHiddenFlask on 12/26 at 11:25 am
I got 2 hand made wooden rockers from my parents and I know I need to stain them. However, I don't know much about it and could use some advice.

I'm thinking I want to do a light colored stain first and then I could go darker on later coats if I wanted to.

Is 2 coats of stain the optimal amount?
Should I coat with water seal after staining?

ETA: any advice appreciated.

You just staining them for appearance or to make them smoother? That shite grows in water, I don't think anything is going to happen to them bare.

They turn grey if you don't stain them. Not worried about rotting, obviously.

They wont rot, but the sun will eat them up, just like any other untreated wood.

Get something with a good UV rating.

ETA: If you plan on leaving them in the sun, stain first, then seal.
The sealer will have the UV rating. Use multiple coats of sealer, scuff/sand between coats.

Use this stuff:

One Time Wood

It's expensive, but worth it.

The darker colors provide greater UV protection.

I have used the Helmsman by Minwax for outdoor cypress before and was happy with the performance.

Should I rethink my light colored stain theory?

This new crap they call cypress will indeed rot. Try linseed oil.

Not really. Just wanted to point that out.

Cypress has such a pretty grain, it would almost be blasphemy to stain it dark.

If they were my chairs, I would use the One Time product in the natural color and just recoat it more often (maybe in 4 or 5 years instead of 7).

That stuff really performs as advertised. I did an entire wharf with it 3 years ago and the wood is still like new.

May I suggest you let them dry/age for a while before doing anything along the line of staining/treating? Perhaps inside in a dry, warm area. Or even out in the sun when it's warm?

Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to let them sit for a while before staining, since I don't need them immediately.

Waterlox a tung oil based finish Use the marine version if it is going to be exposed to UV light... No varnish so it can be touched up as needed with little prep work...
