On a lease that big that's a no no. If that was on a small family plot surrounded by meat hunters or on public land than blast away. Try setting rules on your lease if enough of you are of the same frame of mind.

I saw a damn good deer run across hwy 18 in Vacherie and run over the levee towards the river.

Sometimes its worth the money just to hunt with guys who have a shred of trigger disipline. Leave those to the kids and ladies and everybody profits.

We'd drink for a week if we killed that

It all depends where you are. I'm not a big fan of shooting small bucks, small of course being relative to where you are and what you have.

When management is brought up its shut down immediately. They say if we let too many deer go we'll get hit by blue tongue again. It's a bunch of ignorant old schoolers from SELA.

Never going to happen

What I'm saying is that most of the deer's genes come from the doe, but people completely neglect that when talking about managing deer. That line of genetics isn't all piled up on the ground right there. They're still in the woods.

So how would you go about managing a healthy herd for bigger deer? I see more justification in this post..

ETA: it's definitely where you are and what you have, but I assume this isn't a swamp buck

I have shot deer like that on small plots of land and backyard type hunts but if i shot that at our lease (west central Ms) i would not come back to the camp.

I know how hard it is to change the culture in an area though. Some guys dont care.

However you see fit. I personally don't care. I shoot whatever I want to shoot.

I'll justify it since you want me to so bad. That deer is legal and if the man is proud of it good for him. Perhaps he doesn't care about huge horns. What makes you more right than him?

It's all relative.

You've got big deer dying of old age probably. I get what you're saying and I'm not trying to argue against you. Doesn't sound like the rest of your crew has the same interest as you do though, so you may have to relocate if it matters that much to you. It's gotta be pretty rough hunting with a group who does not think the same as you, regardless of who thinks what.

It's 50/50

I like hunting there and I enjoy shooting deer. I like the freedom to shoot as I please. But I think after one smaller buck you should look for bigger more mature bucks. (On a place like this)

This is the bottom line, everybody has to have the same goals, for some people it is how many deer can I shot in a year, others is trophy deer only. It is much easier finding a place with people that have same goals as you than to try and change the way people think.

I understand your frustration, as it appears the place you hunt has tons of potential to produce some monsters.

I know how ya feel. I'm hunting with guys that have killed hundreds of deer and they'll shoot a spike just as quick as a wall hanger. Mount one one day, kill a spike the next.

Same way the place I was on was. But it was worse before they upped the MS minimum antler size. That made a difference but still everything killed for the most part was barely legal.
