Sportswriter friend of mine creates a 24 team playoff (UPDATED)
Posted by LSUZombie on 12/4 at 8:09 pm
I will preface all of this by saying this is NOT me. You can look at the score for LSU to see that. Still, this guy is a sportswriter up north, and did this for fun. Problem is it's getting ignored on Facebook. Thought some of you might be interested. Here is the first round.

quote:

And here is how I project how a 24-team FBS LEVEL playoff would have opened up this weekend. Remember this is based on the UNBIASED POWER POINT SYSTEM I have used for 10 years. Rewards wins, road wins, a 75 pct winning percentage, and strength of schedule, while punishing weak schedules and losses to bad teams.

First Round BYES: 1. Florida, 2. Notre Dame, 3. Stanford, 4. Alabama, 5. Nebraska, 6. Kansas State, 7. Oregon, 8. Utah State.

First Round Results:

#9 San Jose State 30 #24 Oregon State 21-- The Beavers would have won if healthy, but losing their QB hurts them and the WAC had a historical year. The Spartans came close to beating arguably the best team right now - Stanford -.in week one. The win sets up a showdown with fellow WAC members Utah State in Logan.

#10 Texas A&M 41 #23 Clemson 24 -- the SEC owns the ACC and Johnny Football rules this day. He toss three scoring pass, finishes with 510 all purpose yards and sits the fourth quarter with A&M up 38-7. Next up? A date at Oregon.

#11 Arkansas State 28 #22 Kent State 14 -- The ever improving Sun Belt sees its champion roll over a Kent State team once ranked in the Top 15. It's never really close as ASU sets up a date with Kansas State which promises plenty of intrigue.

#12 Northern Illinois 21 #22 Toledo 20 -- MAC familiarity makes this a close game and Toledo, as talented as any MAC team takes a 20-14 late on a 40-yard field goal. But the Huskies, with the help of an intense crowd, drive 81-yards in 9 plays and Jordan Lynch scores on a two-yard run with :41 seconds to go to complete the rally. Now they are off to Nebraska, where some favor the Huskies to win.

#20 Ball State 14 #13 Rutgers 6 -- The MAC is much deeper than Rutgers and it is shown with four spots within the Top 24 compared to two. The Cardinals' defense stymies Rutgers' bland offense and an early 14-0 lead holds up as Rutgers goes 2-7 inside the Red Zone with two field goals. Ball State now faces a geared up Alabama squad.

#19 Georgia 73 #14 Tulsa 7 -- Pissed off at losing to an Alabama team they should have beat, Aaron Murray throws for 527 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs. Georgia builds a 49-0 halftime lead and sub the starters up 63-7 after three quarters. Murray declares after the game that the "true SEC champions will lead the charge in the playoffs." Stanford hears this and cancels study tables for the week.

#18 Louisiana State 6 #15 Florida State 3 -- A bad offense supported by a solid defense beats an overrated team on both sides of the ball. The Seminoles have a good enough defense to keep LSU out of the end zone, but the Tigers escape Tallahassee with a 31-yard field goal with 3:21 left and a defensive stop inside their 40 to advance to a show down against Notre Dame next week.

#17 Boise State 41 #16 South Carolina 35 -- The Gamecocks came close to giving the SEC a 4-0 start, leading 28-20 going into the fourth quarter, but this is Boise State, always good for one upset, and the rally is complete with 13-seconds left, when, trailing 35-34, the Broncos go for a winning field goal that is blocked. However, the Gamecocks fail to recover and the place holder picks up the ball, finds a wedge, and slips through for an unlikely score. The 'Ole Ball Coach Says afterward.' "I don't know why we find ways to keep underdog teams around long enough to find ways to beat us?" He forgets the common denominator these past years has been him. Then he calls Florida and offers to help his alma mater. Muschamp politely declines the offer citing this year's final score when the two teams played.

What the frick kind of ranking/seeding system is he using?

Bama at 4? Nebraska at 5? LSU behind A&M and USCe? Georgia behind all 3 of them?

Wtf

Terrible

That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Wtf is Utah state doing getting a bye? San Jose state at 9? Most if those team have no business being there. Playoffs that include shitty conferences as auto bids are terrible.

It should be ignored. Horrible.

Not like, some things are okay and some are stretches horrible with a few bold rankings/insight. Pure horrible.

Your "sportswriter" friend might be legitimately retarded.

I did not read it, but based off of the reactions, I think it is safe to assume he writes for Bleacher Report.

Clearly Nebraska deserves a #5 ranking. After losing at UCLA. and at OSU. And getting absolutely destroyed against the 3rd best team in the Leaders division.

I'm trying to figure out how LSU can be ranked behind 2 teams with the same record but easier schedules, that they beat head to head

Some unbiased ranking system there

Any person who uses "unbiased" in this context is not aware of what that word means. Everyone has bias.

I understand why they are ignoring him. Those rankings are outrageously terrible.
quote:

#5. Nebraska
#8. Utah State
#9 San Jose State
#14 Tulsa
#17 Boise State

quote:

strength of schedule, while punishing weak schedules and losses to bad teams

So those 5 schools ahead of Georgia and LSU?

Maybe he should learn to count first and that's only 22 teams.

Here is some clarification on his thinking

quote:

Here are the criteria, simple, unslanted, and untainted: FIRST, Have to win 9 games. IF you can't win 75 percent of your games why would you be worthy of playing or a title anyway?

10 points per D-1 wins ONLY, no credit for winning against D1-AA, etc.
5 points per road win
10 points bonus for win over teams with 8 or more wins.
25 Conference Title Bonus (top independent got 12 points)
LOSE 20 points for loss to Teams with less than 4 wins or sub D-1

1. Florida (11-1), 166 Points
17. BOISE STATE (10-2), 98 points
16. South Carolina (10-2), 99 points

8. UTAH STATE (10-2), 117 points
24. Oregon State (9-3), 73 points
9. San Jose State (10-2), 115 points

4. ALABAMA (11-1), 147 points
20. Ball State (9-3), 87 points
13. RUTGERS (10-2), 106 points

5. NEBRASKA (10-2), 122 points
21. Toledo (9-3), 78 points
12. NORTHERN ILLINOIS (11-1), 109 points

2. NOTRE DAME (12-0), 158 Points
18. Louisiana State (10-2), 97 points
15. FLORIDA STATE (10-2), 99 points

7. Oregon (11-1), 117 points
23. Clemson (10-2), 73 points
10.Texas A&M (10-2), 111 points

3. STANFORD (10-2), 150 points
19. Georgia (11-1), 88 points
14. TULSA (9-3), 102 points

6. KANSAS STATE (11-1), 119 points
22. Kent State (11-1), 73 points
11. ARKANSAS STATE (9-3), 111 points
