At some point, McLean was left in a restroom while the gunman made the manager open the store safe. That’s when McLean, a 23-year-old Air Force veteran, bolted through a side door and ran to his truck. He returned through the front door holding a Glock 40 – pointed directly at the masked robber. “I told him to freeze and to drop his weapon,” McLean told Fox News. Instead, the robber took off – last seen running down the street from the store.

quote:

But two days after the robbery – and just a week before Thanksgiving – McLean was fired. Television station WTKR reported that McLean violated corporate policy by leaving the store and returning with a weapon. The station spoke to a representative from the company’s corporate office who said they had a “zero tolerance policy for employees having weapons inside the store.”

anytime an employee brings a weapon into a franchise type store like that they are going to get fired. What if the manager had been shot because of his actions?

This was posted a few days ago on the outdoor board, along with a link to the Autozone customer service email.

O'reillys Autoparts just got a boost in sales.

He may have just as well been shot if the guy didn't return with a gun.

Lawyer up for what? The policy is clear as day. I completely disagree with it, but what grounds is he going to sue on?

He can lawyer up if he wants to, I assure you he signed paperwork or completed training that states he would be fired for this offense regardless of the situation. They probably even have an active shooter situational guideline. There are no acceptable variances to those policies, as odds are it will not end well if not followed.

People that work for other people have to follow the rules or face the consequences. I'm not saying I agree with it in its entirety, but it is a pretty simple concept.

the difference is autozone isn't on the hook for a lawsuit if the robber is the one who shoots someone.

i'm pro-gun, but most companies would respond the same way, they're just covering their own asses. An analogy would be if a bank employee left and came back with a gun during a robbery - that's just not a behavior you want any employee to do, regardless of situation

He's not gonna win anything. It's their policy.

Doesn't mean it doesn't suck donkey scrotum though. I prefer Autozone over other similar store, but that just changed.

I'm sure the similar store you are referring to has the exact same policy, and would take the same action.

It's clearly stated in their corporate policy. I'm pretty sure in retail business, you're told to just go along and cooperate in a robbery. They are insured for whatever is stolen, and you don't endanger anyone else.

He has absolutely no grounds whatsoever to sue for wrongful termination

Exactly - bringing a gun in to protect corporate inventory? Dumb. Dude would be better off loading up the robbers car for him.
