I used to work with a guy who spent his vacations in Costa Rico. He said he was going to retire there. Said the cost of living was low, you could have a 2000 sq ft home near the water, a live in housekeeper/cook, and 1st world health care for around $2K per month.

Probably true for Ecuador or Panama as well. We are considering this ourselves.

Yes. Perfect weather, mountains and ocean, US dollar as currency, cheap (except for liquor), and I believe if you can prove you have a steady income (401(k) or pension plan) you get access to the national healthcare.

Not anymore, but it's still cheap compared to the US.

I know three people that bought and moved there this year. Apparently there is some appeal although I'm not sure exactly.

Costa Rica has seen it´s better days. Most people in the know, with cash, have been buying in Colombia, since 2007.
