Who chooses moderators and how do they do it?

Is it up to the network airing the debate? Do either of the participants get to approve reject the decision (like a jury selection)?

I'm admittedly ignorant. But I don't get how hard it is to find someone who will be fair and not take shite from either candidate during the debate....

Watching the 2008 Town Hall Meeting Second Debate, and Tom Brokaw is hosting.

First question is to Obama about how to turn around the economy.

What do we find in Obama's first two minutes of speaking?

"It means that we are helping state and local governments set up road projects and bridge projects"

He forgot to mention that they just night not be shovel ready ...

More from Obama in the 2008 Town Hall debate:

"When George Bush came into office, we had surplus. And now we have a $0.5 trillion deficit annually. When George Bush came into office, our debt, national debt was around 5 trillion. It's now over $10 trillion. We've almost doubled it. And so while it's true that nobody's completely innocent here, we have had, over the last eight years, the biggest increases in deficit spending and national debt in our history."

What he says now compared to 08 is almost identical just a few changes here and there
