Suggestions on a new shotgun
Posted by tigersnducks on 7/31 at 2:19 pm
I am looking at getting a new or "new to me" shotgun for duck season this year. I don't have many requirements. One is it must be semi auto and the second is it cant be stupid expensive.

I hunt mostly marsh. Any suggestions on models, and where the best place to find one is?

Beretta.

Look around enough and you can find one decently priced.

I'm a Benelli fan and have an SBE2 and the Super Vinci, but for what you are asking get the WInchester Super X3. It's pretty much the Browning Maxus rebadged. You can get it new for about $1k.

Super X3

SBE II American and put a limbsaver recoil pad on it. You can have that for less than $1200
Next choice is a Browning Silver. Look around and you can find it around $850. Not bad for a good Browning semi.
Both 3-1/2" guns and both great duck guns

My friend just bought a Browning Maxus. It seems like a pretty bada$$ gun. He got it in duck blind camo and it looks sweet.

Tigersnducks, please do not take this personally. It's not you. The OB loves you and we want you around.

Gentelmen, how many of these threads are started in a given week? 3 at most? 1 at least? It's time we started an all-inclusive 'How to buy a new shotgun' thread

ETA: Oh, and go with what fits and what you can shoulder correctly/easily. Mine? Browning Maxus. I love it

I just got a Maxus and also have a Browning Gold Hunter. Do yourself a favor and start looking at gunbroker.com. I bought all my shotguns from there and managed to get the Maxus (NIB) in duck blind camo for $200 less than I could here in Houston.

Browning Gold or Silver guns are solid. Quick search on gunbroker yielded these:

You can beat these guns up. Just clean after every use and you will be fine.

dont get wood grain, but i'm sure this goes with out saying. i have a browing gold and have never had a problem with it other than crap low brass shells. if you can get a newer model i would go with one of those. gold's have been said to have jamming problems. gunbroker is the way to go imo

SBE and SBE2 are great guns. Shot a sbe2 this weekend and fell in love with it. Also shot a sx2, xtrema 2, and super Vinci this weekend. I'd put the xtrema 2 second, and the super Vinci last. It felt like a piece of shite.

Found a SBE at a pawn shop recently for $800 with case and extra chokes. Good deals are out there.

I have one of these, and it's a great mid-range price gun. I do want to step up and get a Maxis or a SBE2 though, they are both awesome guns.

I'll be the first to suggest the Remington 1187. It's built on the same shaped receiver as an 870 and is probably the most affordable, reliable semi auto shotgun, except the old Mossberg 930. You can get them with a 3" or 3.5" chamber for those candle sticks you sling at ducks.

Hell just get a Mossberg and be done with it. I've got one and it shoots just fine. No it doesn't shoot as good as my browning but it was only like $250.
