re: Dog Acting Strangely

Reading this thread had me ready to take my dog to emergency care just for a checkup. Whole lot of panic mechanics in this thread. "TAKE HER TO THE VET NOW!!!!!1 wait Nevermind, tomorrow is fine, NO WAIT, RIGHT THIS frickING MINUTE"
Haha, I know, it was a bit stressful reading the thread. I know everyone was trying to help, and I appreciate that, but I posted the thread hoping someone with vet experience would post as well. Luckily, brgetthenet's woman is knowledgable and helped me get a better understanding of the urgency of the situation. I knew waiting a bit would probably be best, and we will just keep an eye on her to see what we do tomorrow.

Thanks for your advice too

Mine kept me up last night because of storms and is sleeping on my feet snoring like an old man right now. Damn dog.

I know this experience very well

your dog actually acted differently because it had a tick on it?...frick, man, I had one on my scrote during turkey season and I am not sure how long it was there before I found it...

They have an emergency vet on 190 in Mandeville. Brought my beagle there a couple of times. Great vets. Visit was $100, treatment was obviously on top if that. Here's the number...985-626-4862.

If she gets one in her ear that turns into one of those big gray dog ticks the size of a grape almost then yeah, she starts panting and acting like something is up. It has only happened a cpl times though because she rarely gets ticks because I keep her poisoned.

If you get one in your ear you will know it. They can make humans sick too. Luckily, or not, they like the warmer.regions.

Hopefully, it's not poisoning. There have been several occurrences of poisoning from chicken dog jerky treats made in China (2007 thru present). I think the last report was December 2011.

See the symptoms near the bottom of the linked page. My daughter's dog got sick every time he got a treat back in 2007. Those treats didn't look anything like this pic.

Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Diarrhea, sometimes bloody
Increased thirst and/or urination
Decreased activity

Toxic Pet Treats

my 11 year old lab started doing the same thing at about the same age. Nothing wrong with her, just wants food and attention.

My dog, a 9 year old beagle, is acting bizarre. She's panting, her mouth seems open a bit more, with her tongue hanging out. She's panting heavily and following my mom around wherever she goes. She isn't whining or anything, but this behavior isn't normal. She's been inside for most of the afternoon, so I don't think it's heat-related.

She just seems very anxious. Could this be a sign of pain? I'm thinking vet tomorrow, but in the meantime, can anyone provide any insight?

She's still breathing weirdly, and shaking. I want to take her tonight but we'll wait until morning

This sounds regrettably familiar to me. My wife and I have a 12 year old french bulldog. For the past few months, our dog has had sporadic, brief episodes of panting for no apparent reason... we found it curious, but it only lasted a minute, then she would be perfectly fine, and it wouldn't happen again for a couple weeks or so that we could tell. Because she overheats quickly anyway, we didn't think much of it at first. In the past month, it evolved into seizures, one which was so bad it left her blind on in one eye, and for a couple days she could only walk in circles to one side (the opposite side of the blindness).

Our dog has no history of epilepsy, so the vet's diagnosis is that she has a brain tumor, which, as it began growing, started obstructing normal brain function and inducing small seizures; and as the tumor has grown more, the seizures have worsened.

We put her on meds (anti-seizure and steroids/anti-inflammatory), and she's recovered fairly well, even gaining her vision back, but she's on borrowed time now being as old as she is.

I think on pg 2 you said your dog is already prone to epileptic seizures, so I don't know how that might play a role, but your dog is also a little on the old side, and the symptoms are pretty much identical to what we were seeing.

Hope your situation turns out better than ours. Best of luck.

I thought the same thing when I first read this. I am diabetic and my "mutt" can sense when something is off.
Edit: I was responding to someone's post about the dog sensing something was the matter with the OP 's mom
