| College Loans Posted by jimbeam How many of you made it through without them? So far (going to be a junior) I've paid through scholarships. I may have to take one out towards the end of my senior year unless I get a decent paying job. Your experience? Reply Back to Top |
| Work hard. Get 2-3 jobs and nap in between. Worth not having loans. Reply Back to Top |
| Went my first year and then joined the guard. They paid back my $3,500 student loan. Get $1,500 month with drill during a full month of school. My school through several different pots of money is paid for. That $1500 doesn't go towards any school, it's what I use to live on. I don't have a job. Only get paid that because I have a $350 gi bill kicker and I'm at a higher percentage with being deployed once. I hate the guard with a passion but I would do it over again. No chance in hell will I do another 6 years. The ability to not have to work during college is amazing. I'll work the rest of my life. This post was edited on 7/23 at 10:16 pm Reply Back to Top |
| No loans for undergrad for my wife and I (combination of parents and scholarships). We'll end up with about $125k in grad school debt and another $15-$50k if I decide to get my MBA. Reply Back to Top |

| I did. However, my parents always paid my rent and car insurance, which was a big help. Some are okay, IMO. Hundreds of thousands for an undergrad is really dumb. Reply Back to Top |

| I can actually get probably half my grad school paid for in I stay in. I don't plan on staying in. Probably just end up getting about 9 grad school hours paid for and pay the rest out of pocket(gi bill, so really not truly out of pocket.) At that point though, I'll have job hopefully. I can still draw GI Bill benefits the entire time in grad school which would pay for it. Should be able to knock out my undergrad and grad school while only dropping 5 to 10k total for both. | Y'all sound like some of the callers on the Dave Ramsey Show: Caller: I owe $150K in student loans. Dave: Ok doc. Caller: Not a doctor...have a doctorate in French Studies. Dave: What are you going to do with that? Caller: Well right now I have a good job making $15K and can get a $2K raise after a year. Why don't people think about what they are going to school for and what kind of $ can be made in that field before spending lots of $ on some worthless degree? Reply Back to Top |
quote: Who does? Golfer might add a MBA. I wouldn't call that "worthless." 125 for 2 undergrad and 2 master's isn't too bad really. I'm assuming both he and his wife are done with school now. I didn't want a pile of debt so I got the government to pay that shite. I'm almost done. This post was edited on 7/24 at 2:02 am Reply Back to Top |
| Scholarships and paid for undergrad engineering and company paid for all of MBA. Zero student loans. I don't understand all these people wanting to pay for MBA's with their own $. Get a legit undergrad...get a job...get them to pay for part or all of MBA at night or weekends. It's better to go when you have real world work experience anyway. | Maybe their company will not pay for the MBA? Maybe they just need one to get where they want to go? I don't think you can blanket every situation with your own. Also, you compared a MBA to a doctorate in French Studies. I agree, I think student loans are the devil. That's why I joined so I wouldn't have them while making decent money in the process. I'll be out with a paid off new car, degree, a small roth ira started, and about 15k in the bank. Pretty good situation compared to what I was in 4 years ago. I had $600 and $3,500 in school debt. Getting deployed was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was overseas and great friends with a fellow medic. Came home and met his sister shortly after. I'm marrying said sister in a couple months, came home with 40k in the bank, made more $ in school as a result of being paid a higher percentage of the gi bill. Some of that money went to pay off her car and furniture loan. We're completely debt free and she's an RN, we don't have a dtv bill, internet is $20 a month. Life is good at the moment. | I do understand what you're saying about crap degrees. Just haven't seen that evidence in this thread is all. It's amazing how much people go in debt when it's not going to get them a job in many cases. Reply Back to Top |
| I took out a $3500 student loan my redshirt senior year (took me 5 years to graduate). It will be paid off in December. I could pay it off now, but have been told to just let it ride out monthly. My fiance has a student loan to pay off from nursing school. I guess I'll be inheriting that when we get married. Reply Back to Top |
Posted by CalcuttaTigah on 7/24 at 7:50 am to jimbeam Here is my piece...get a student loan to supplement a part time job. I paid my own way through school with a decent job and paid rent out of the student loan every other month. That way, you still work but don't have the pressure of paying for school and supporting yourself entirely and can still have the college experience. 13k with a one year masters included. | got TOPS to pay all my tuition costs for the 8 semesters I was in college. Parents helped me out with books/supplies, my part time job paid for my rent and beer money. Graduated with no debt and still have no debt other than my mortgage Reply Back to Top |
| I personally will end up with about 20k in loans. My mom will have about 100k between my sister and I. My mom should have just quit her job she "makes too much" so we get no assistance. But a kid I know who drives a Denali and lives in a country club gets the pell grant. Luckily I'll be able to make enough to pay mine off and eventually my moms. Reply Back to Top |
