Stossel - Unpaid Internships
Posted by Joshjrn on 7/12 at 8:10 pm
Is anyone else watching this weasel guest on Stossel's show whine about about college students taking internship positions and being "taken advantage" of? Really illustrates some of the fundamental problems with this nation.

well, i will say this much.
those who can afford to take an unpaid position and get fast tracked within a company does seem a bit unfair to those who had to work for $$$$ to get through college.

private business, private rules - i know - and certainly dont disagree. just saying i understand why some people have a problem with it.

Is he really whining? He often likes to play devil's advocate in his interviews.

The debate on unpaid internships has brewed for several years. It accelerated in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, when job scarcity increased the appeal of unpaid job placements.

Today, the debate over internships runs something like this:

Employers (and many interns) argue that internships are mutually advantageous. Sure, interns don't get paid, but they earn something more valuable: experience. As interns, students and recent graduates learn a craft outside of the classroom. They establish networks, collegial relationships, and ultimately, build the foundation needed to find the job of their choice.

Critics are more skeptical.

They say unpaid internships often violate existing labor laws. Particularly in for-profit companies, interns act as unpaid hired hands. Rather than learn a trade, they learn the how-to's of office drudgery: making coffee, sending faxes, and learning the intricacies of the office printer. Rarely are they exposed to substantive work.

Others point to the inequity of internships. Because interns work for free, only the well-off can afford to take them. With rent to pay and college loans to meet, a lack of internship experience can put students of more modest means at a disadvantage. This means that wealth, not merit, determines the likelihood of future employment.

IMHO they are no more unethical than say volunteering for any other purpose.

I see what you're saying.

I just got out of law school and obviously paid positions are at a premium these days. There are a bunch of unpaid internships as you would imagine in such tough times.

I have ZERO problem with firms offering unpaid positions, etc, but you are right that kids who have to work and earn money kinda get "screwed."

Its no one's fault, just a shitty situation to be in when you need both experience and money at this minute, and therefore the cost of driving to the internship, working 8 or more hours for nothing, and still trying to pay bills. You end up behind the 8 ball either way.

Dude, unpaid internships are abused. I've seen it. I can understand if the dude is completely in a learning environment, but I've seen interns do real, serious work just like a regular employee and not get paid.

That shite is wrong. If somebody is doing a professional-level job, he/she should be paid.

There are different levels of internships, IMO.

I've done real, serious work just like a regular employee at externships and never got paid. Want to know why? Because I wanted to. They were ok with my tagging along and watching them in court all day, but from day 1, I told them that I was serious about my work and that I would do anything they could throw at me, as much as they could throw at me. Once again, want to know why? Because now I have professionals who would vouch for my work product and my work ethic.

If they were paying me, do you think they would have let me spend an entire day fighting to write my first motion? That basic motion would have cost them $80 and they wouldn't have made a dime. I got the opportunity to gain experience and contacts that I never would have had a shot of making if they had to pay me. Working my arse off for free was one of the best things I've ever done to help my career.

How many of these interns are held at gunpoint to take these positions? People line up to get these positions. Must not be too bad.

I wonder how the critics propose to back these statements up ? In my working years I had the opportunity to work with quite a few interns and they did the same tasks as we did. It was definitely a learning experience for them and several that I worked with were eventually hired after graduation.

Companies screen these young people to ensure they get the "best of the best".

You consider yourself an intellectual, don't you? You know what's good for other people better than they do?

The truth is it doesn't matter what you think other people should be paid. Some people recognize the benefit of unpaid labor as an investment in their future earnings. Are they not allowed to experience the benefit of personal sacrifice?

These people just need to shut their damn mouth. We take on up to 3 unpaid interns a year and usually hire them on in some capacity afterwards. Without the internship they never would have been hired. Ours are all College credit internships so they are mutually beneficial and allow a low cost, low risk way of finding possible management positions.
