Will we be able to count one of this years recruits back... Posted by ColeLSU into last years class? We have 16 commits and seem to be in good shape with a good bit of others... Tim Williams Desean Smith Kendall Beckwith RSJ Lewis Neal Priest Willis Tahaan Goodman Scott Pagano G Gilmore Melvin Jones Ricky Jefferson T-Rod Prevot Eddie Vanderdoes Will Likely I know we wont get every one of these but theres still a good bit of interested talent on our board and theres always 'late surprises'. So how are we gonna finish up. I'd like to sign over and count some back if thats possible depending on Liggins I guess. This post was edited on 6/28 at 8:12 am Reply Back to Top
In order to enroll early, there have to be spots under the 85 total counter limit in the spring. Depending on how many graduate in December and/or withdraw from school to enter the draft, we should have several spots available for early enrollees. However, in order for an early enrollee to count back, there must have been room under the 25 initial counter limit and under the 85 total counter limit in the previous fall. As it stands now, assuming Liggins doesn't qualify, we will enroll 22 initial counters this fall, meaning we are 3 under there. We also currently have 83 projected total counters for the fall (returning scholarship players plus initial counters), so we are 2 under there. This means we could possibly have room for 2 early enrollees to count back. However, it has been rumored that Alleman and Porter will be awarded scholarships this fall, which would bring our total counter number up to the 85 limit. If that happens, there will not be room to count any of the early enrollees back. This post was edited on 6/28 at 9:01 am Reply Back to Top
Gotcha... So we can likely only sign 25. Oh well. Thanks for knowing your shit! Reply Back to Top
Thanks, but it's just my somewhat tortured reading of the three NCAA regulations below: 15.5.6.1 Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] There shall be an annual limit of 25 on the number of initial counters (per Bylaw 15.02.3.1) and an annual limit of 85 on the total number of counters (including initial counters) in football at each institution. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/92, 12/15/06) 15.3.3 Period of Institutional Financial Aid Award. 15.3.3.1 One-Year Period. If a student’s athletics ability is considered in any degree in awarding financial aid, such aid shall neither be awarded for a period in excess of one academic year nor for a period less than one academic year (see Bylaw 15.01.5). (Revised: 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06) 15.3.3.1.1 Exceptions. An institution may award athletically related financial aid to a student-athlete for a period of less than one academic year only under the following circumstances: (Adopted: 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06) (a) Midyear Enrollment. A student-athlete whose first full-time attendance at the certifying institution during a particular academic year occurs at midyear (e.g., the beginning of the second semester or second or third quarter of an academic year) may receive a financial aid award for the remainder of that academic year. (Revised: 5/9/06) 15.5.6.3.2 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering after Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete recruited by the awarding institution who enters after the first term of the academic year and immediately receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) shall be an initial counter for either the current academic year (if the institution’s annual limit has not been reached) or the next academic year. The student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received. I am open to consider other reasonable interpretations if someone has one. This post was edited on 6/28 at 9:28 am Reply Back to Top

I don't think we can. I think according to the SEC rule it is a hard 25 and last years class was the last year that you could count back. I don't think it's a NCAA issue but an SEC issue. Reply Back to Top
quote:The SEC rule is that you can only accept 25 LOI's. The technicality is that no one actually has to sign a LOI at all. So if there is room for a kid to enroll early and count back, he can do just that without signing a LOI and counting against the SEC's 25-LOI limit, and the school can still accept 25 LOI's on NSD. | Correct. As long as the room is available under the 85 guys can count back. The previous year part is what is confusing right now and we won't know for sure until the classes come in and we look at the numbers. Under the rules for last year, we would be able to take 86 minimum and possibly more depending on the other nonqualified guys. The confusion is over whether the traditional backcount rule is still in effect. That is where we will have to wait and see the numbers at the end. All I know is that UGA is planning to take 30+ so there has to be some way to count back. Whether it's directly linked to the 85 or last year's take is what I don't know. May be a combination of both. Either way come next summer our biggest issue will be getting to 85 no matter whether we take 25 or more. We will lose 15-17 at most next year. We'll be looking at anywhere from 5-10 guys that will have to leave due to attrition next year depending on who doesn't qualify this year, Alleman and Porter being on scholarship or not, how many kids leave early for the NFL and how many we take in the class. Nothing unusual but the amount we take in the class is never our biggest issue. We can take at least 25 every year but it doesn't mean we have 25 spots available. This is what is truly oversigning not the per year intake bull shite that some try to pawn off and why the SEC had no issues putting a cap on the yearly intake. We'll still oversign and the Big Ten will continue to bitch and complain about it. This is the life of an SEC fan. Reply Back to Top Refresh |
