Dog tore his ACL, surgery is $2,200, what would you do? Posted by Toreaux Rottie/Lab mix, 5 years old. On the one hand, it's a dog and I have a lot of other expenses right now. He could just live with a limp and me give him anti-inflammatories forever, giving him arthritis. On the other, it's my responsibility as a dog owner to help him- shell out $2,200 and fix the guy, although he will always have some issues with the knee. What would you do? Reply Back to Top

You dont really need an acl. Hell just limp a little Reply Back to Top
Damn that sucks. I have to say, if if happened to my pup I'd pay to have it fixed. Nothing wrong if you go the other route. Just what I would do. How does the 2200 compare to what you pay for the anti inflammatory? May come out cheaper in the long run to opt for surgery? Reply Back to Top

Can you afford it? What's the long term cost of chronic anti inflammatory therapy relative to an ACL repair? Reply Back to Top
Be there for your dog bro. Reply Back to Top

Quit being such a cheap arse and get Him fixed. Host a fund raiser if you are really in that bad of a place money wise Reply Back to Top

Friend's had this happen. They did the surgery, and he did ok for a little while, but ended up hurting it again few months after. Now he just limps a little when he runs too much. Reply Back to Top

$2,200 is a lot of money. If things are tight id go no surgery at least till you could save up some cash. ETA how does a dog tear an ACL? This post was edited on 6/28 at 7:24 am Reply Back to Top
quote: No, that's the one you shoot. They lived long enough. Reply Back to Top |
Had a similar situation with my dog. Rimadyl adds up after awhile. Since he's only 5, may be more cost effective to get the surgery. Reply Back to Top

| A coworker just had this happen to his rottweiler. What normally happens is the dog has one strong ligament(the repaired one) and a weaker one(the natural ligament). The natural ligament due to its lower strength will fail because the dog thinks it can put just as much pressure on it as the repaired ligament which will result in not one, but two surgeries. Ask your vet about how likely this is to happen. Spending over 10k on one of my dogs health issues, I sometimes question whether it was the right decision. At only five years old he should have about 5 more years. Its a tough call and only you know the right answer. I had my dogs leg amputated and hes had 7 good years after that.
