With the new playoff method, will the SEC get smaller, not larger?
Posted by engl6914 on 6/23 at 9:05 am
The emphasis will now be on conference champions in the playoff. I'm guessing any SEC team getting in at large will be one who didn't play the SEC champs in the regular season. The larger the SEC, the harder to get into the playoff. Would Arkansas, Missouri, or A&M have come into the SEC if the new playoff method had been in effect? Each team would have a better chance of entering the playoff from another conference. In other words, are we witnessing the end of the super-conference movement? And will teams now consider leaving the SEC in order to have a better chance of entering the playoff?

Decent point. We're not leaving, but decent point about conference growing at a time when smaller conference has a better chance at the championship.

This alignment is build for BCS, which is now gone.

Championships of every kind will become rarer and more difficult. That's why I believe the expanding conferences are a mistake in the long term. The fans get fricked, again.

Teams decide to leave or join conferences because of money not championships so no. All bowl money is split of course.

ETA the SEC will likely have 2 teams in every year (when it goes to 8) making it a desirable conference to be in for both shared money and championships.
