Jeb Bush slams the Republican Party
Posted by Colonel Toddy on 6/11 at 11:40 am
I agree with Jeb except for blaming Obama for the GOP's far lurch to the right. What a cop out. Look at your own base Jeb. THAT"S where you'll find the problem.

quote:

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said today that both Ronald Reagan and his father George H. W. Bush would have had a difficult time getting nominated by today's ultra-conservative Republican Party.

"Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, as would my dad — they would have a hard time if you define the Republican party — and I don’t — as having an orthodoxy that doesn’t allow for disagreement, doesn’t allow for finding some common ground," Bush said, adding that he views the hyper-partisan moment as "temporary."

"Back to my dad’s time and Ronald Reagan’s time – they got a lot of stuff done with a lot of bipartisan suport," he said. Reagan "would be criticized for doing the things that he did."

Bush cited, in particular, "the budget deal my dad did, with bipartisan support — at least for a while — that created the spending restraint of the ‘90s," a reference to a move widely viewed now as a political disaster for Bush, breaking a pledge against tax increases and infuriating conservatives. It was, Bush said, "helpful in creating a climate of more sustainted economic growth."

Bush said that Mitt Romney's move to channel Republicans' anger over immigration in the primary has put him "in somewhat of a box" in the general election. He advised Romney to offer a "broader and more intense" approach to the issue. He suggested Romney continue to campaign in Hispanic communities, that he recast immigration as an economic issue, and that he focus on the question of education.

"I do feel a little out of step with my party on this," he said.

Bush did offer Obama one point of agreement: That the economic "headwinds" the president has been mocked for citing are real.

"We’ve got major headwinds with Europe and the slowdown in Asia as well," Bush said, predicting weak economic growth in the short term.

Based on its past two (five, actually) nominees?

I hear you. Not sure how in their right mind anyone could look at the party that nominated Bush, McCain and now Romney as "too far right."

Who were they finding common ground and accommodating then ... vice the people on the other side now?

The game has changed.

To hell with all this accommodating and caving in, because it's never a two-way street anymore.

Gotta remember, daddy bush was part of the anti-Goldwater coalition, and even referred to Regan's economics as "voodoo economics." Preston Bush was a bigtime progressive.

The same ultra-conservative republican party that just nominated Mitt Romney?

Jeb just went full retard.

Good. He should switch parties and become a Democrat. The Bush GOP is the LOSER GOP. If the GOP wants to keep losing, then, they should keep going with the Bush/Rove Establishment GOP.

If you hated GWB so much(as almost every political hack does), then why do you use his brother as a measurement of the polical landscape?BTW I don't want a President that cannot or will not lead the nation. The things Oboe has led is the apology express he bows down reflexively, along with outspending EVERY President in US history. He has mastered the pompous arse chin in the air move, an acomplishment for which the East German judge would give him a 10.

There are many ways I would describe the Republican Party but ultra-conservative isn't one of them.

Probably not, especially if he had to deal with people like Reid and Pelosi everyday.

That may be the case, but on the other side JFK would certainly not be a Democrat today.

I really like and agree with what Jeb is saying. I don't understand why "moderate" has become such a bad word.

Jesus Christ - were the 1980's and 1990's when great politicians like Reagan and Clinton and GHWB worked across the aisle really so bad? Those were some of the best days in American history.

Reid and Pelosi have been far more willing to work with Republicans than vice versa - especially these ignorant Tea Party newbies.

I'm thinking back to the first two years of the obama presidency when Republicans were virtually eliminated from any significant legislative role and I'm thinking you may be a bit off in your assessment.
