Bunt defense for strong 10-year old baseball team... Posted by Chicken This is closed bases (ie not leading off by base runner). Why would you not have both 1st and 3rd crash when batter shows bunt, have 2B cover first base and have SS cover either 2B or 3B (depending on if there is a runner on 2B)? I have read that many teams have 3b stay home if runner on second, but in closed bases, SS should have time to get to 3b. Thoughts? Reply Back to Top

Basses empty? Full? what situation you got? Reply Back to Top
try running the wheel play Reply Back to Top
i think you answered your own question. closed bases, there's no reason not to bring both corners in, unless you think the kid will fake bunt and take a choked cut Reply Back to Top
Completely depends on the baserunners/outs scenario. Reply Back to Top
Both crash, SS covers 3B if runners on 1st and 2nd, SS covers 2B if only a runner on first. If there is only a runner on 1B then the P or 3B has to cover 3rd if they don't field the bunt. At least that's what I'd do. Reply Back to Top
Pitch at the batters head. Or benind him a few times. Reply Back to Top
with 3B charging, SS goes to cover 2B. 2B covers 1B. Problem is guy on first will goe first to third on bunt cuz no one is covering. We do it all the time. The 3B get caught up in play spectating and doesnt get back to bag to cover. Reply Back to Top
because there really isn’t enough room for 3 people to cover. 2 people will suffice. Reply Back to Top
Flair, batter not allowed to show bunt and then swing away. Reply Back to Top

Brinner, what are you suggesting? Reply Back to Top
10 year olds should be slow enough that the C or P can get the ball up the middle, and depending on the throwing hand of the C/P's assign them to a baseline, and shade the SS and 2B in if the P can't get to the ball and leave 1B to cover the bag. If you've got a lefty bunting to 3B, you def. crash the 3B. Of course the base runner situation alters everything depending on what the endgoal of the bunt is. (I was a bunting fool in the leadoff and 2 spot) Reply Back to Top
If you have a smart and good thir baseman he should draw a box in his mind and if the bunt is hit hard enough in the box charge it and throw the guy out. If not hold and cover third. That it what we did but might be hard for ten year olds. Defintetly practice it with your third basemen. But since they can't steal I don't know. Hope that helps. Reply Back to Top
quote: Yup... I had this problem with HS players (not a good team, don't worry) not reacting quickly to a player squaring around. Reply Back to Top |
I have a SS with a high baseball Iq Reply Back to Top
Just run one bunt coverage for everything if they're 10. Just bring 3b in and let ss cover third. At 10 yrs old, your pitcher is your best athlete already, 90% of the time the pitcher will recover the bunt. Reply Back to Top
They can steal...just no lead offs. Runners can steal after ball crosses the plate Reply Back to Top
