In the grand scheme of musical history, is Elton John underrated?
Posted by Rex on 5/23 at 11:01 pm
I say yes. The best male voice in the history of rock, fantastic tunes, great rockers and sweet ballads, an amazing run in the 70's, great pianist, showman, fashion icon, longevity... I just don't think he gets the chatter he deserves. He's not the Beatles, but he should be mentioned with the Stones, the Bee Gees, Pink Floyd...

Well, he can write tunes. I think Bernie Taupin still writes the lyrics.

he's a good musician, maybe a little bit formulaic though

he gets a bad rap because hes gay and therefore only acceptable for women to like him

Certainly not true of his earlier stuff. Take Me to the Pilot?

I agree that he is underrated. The guy was amazing in his prime, but....

There have been stronger voices: Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry... but none as strong AND melodious.

Yeah I'd say so. He's well respected but generally speaking his name isn't brought up by most. IDK if I'd say underrated as much as under appreciated.

John, like Billy Joel, gets alot of credit for his voice due to his piano playing. Elton is great...but not amazing.

He has a recognizable voice but i wouldn't confuse that with power.

If we're talking underrated, let's not talk Elton John.

Let's talk Van Morrison. He's twice as good as Elton John and maybe 1/8 as appreciated.

I like Van Morrison but come on.

Elton John was a great great great singer in his prime. He had range and control and sounded almost as good live as in studio.

Hes one of my favorite artists of all time.

i think he's rated right where he should be...somewhere in the middle...not the best but far from the worst.

Elton John is routinely listed among the greats and is widely considered one of the best showmen in rock history. He's rated exactly right. Great artist, but level below the inner circle guys like Dylan. I've never heard anyone just say "Elton John sucks". He's rated pretty highly, as he should be.

Elton John is great on the piano but sucks on the organ.

Agreed. I listened to him like a maniac until the late 70's. But it's been something like 35 years since I thought it worthwhile to buy one of his albums. He is not underrated for the vast bulk of his career.

You can't be serious.

eta: This is not one of my favorite Elton John songs, but here is an example of him singing with another highly respected singer. George Michael is no slouch by anybody's account in the vocal department, but Elton comes in at 3:00 and it's immediately much richer:

As serious as that itchy feeling the crabs will give you.

Go look at the thread where people are listing their favorite Van Morrison tracks. Look at how many songs are listed. Try a similar thread for Elton John and see what it shows you.

Ultimate points:
1. Morrison has more songwriting talent in his pubic hairs than Elton John had in his whole body on the most creative day in his life.
2. Morrison is a better singer than Elton John. I look forward to you trying to dispute this statement. Because this will afford me the opportunity to respond expose you as a full ruhtard.
3. Elton John could never do an album as amazing and musically groundbreaking as "Astral Weeks".
3a. Morrison has a creative 6th gear that very few others have possessed. And that Elton John certainly doesn't possess.

Rex, we may not agree on much, but we do agree on music.

A couple of my favorite EJ songs:

No Valentines

I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun of Robert Ford)
